cake decorators urgent help needed- disaster!!!!

morning, i have ust had a disaster .. i made a big cake for a friend and decorated it with roll out icing, it was pretty much finished and i left it overnight to dry out a bit.. this morning i went to transfer it onto the board from the lazy susan (in hindsight i proably should have done it straght on the board, but i seem to muck them up if i do that) anyway.. it was heavy and a bit stuck and now where i was pushing it the icing has all cracked on both sides and a it on the top where it pushed up... it looks awful... is there anything i can do except take it all off and start again??

please help!!!!

  • Is there any way you could hide the dodgy bits with a decoration of some kind? Either piped or cut outs?

If you have any icing left I suppose you could try and fill in the cracks?

  • Have you got any flowers or decoration of some sort for the top, with trailing ribbon might cover it ? and why not put a ribbon round the side to cover the side stuff. Piping patterns can cover a multitude of sins - good luck with it

Before you ditch the cake there is one trick you could try but you have to be very careful. The reason that the icing has cracked is that it has dried out and become brittle if you rubbed a wet finger over the cracks the icing should absorb the icing and become semi-pliable again. You should then be able to mould the cracks shut. But please use a minimal amount of water otherwise you will waterlog the icing and it will make a hell of a mess.I've used this technique and it does work but be warned it needs a light hand and when you've got the icing slightly softened it will feel sticky so coat your hands in icing sugar so that they dont stick to the icing.

thanks for your help, i have saved it i think!!! what i did was used some of the leftover blue icing that i had saved and made it into a paste with some water and used it to fill the cracks like polyfiller.. its not great, but it will do and wont show too much once i've stuck gold stars and number ones all over the sides hopefully!!!
phew.. it would have cost a fortune to buy all that icing again...
