What should a Kenwood Chef sound like?

:hello:
Hope someone can help me:
I used my Kenwood Chef (old one, bought off ebay) today to make a cake but am a bit concerned that all may not be well with it! It is in lovely condition to look at but I am not a machine minded person  - it just looks nice and clean! :D
It sounded a bit funny - sort of 'lumpy' IFYKWIM not smooth and was a bit of a stale smell. I thought at first that was maybe cos hadn't been used for a while but now am thinking maybe it needs greasing or new bearings? Would that make it sound funny?
 It sort of reminded me of the noise my old car made when the bearings went - but that was over 20 yrs ago and my memory is not what it was!!

Anyway I wondered if anyone had experience of this kind of thing and could tell me what/where to look to check it out?

    Hi,

I have got an old Kenwood Chef, and it is quite noisy when it is running. However, I wouldn't describe it as lumpy sounding. You could try asking at the Yahoo Group WACEM, where (believe it or not) there are people who are mixer enthusiasts and seem to be very knowledgeable about such things.

I have a new model and that makes a sort of whirring noise, not at all lumpy even on fast settings.

I bet its something to do with the fact its not been used for a while and needs greasing like you say. A bit like my sewing machine when I dont use it for ages, it doesnt sound smooth until I oil it and let the oil work through.

Is it an old one? We've got my late mother's one which is about 35 years old. About 10 years ago we used it and it behaved like yours. I brought it to an authorised repairer who after keeping it for 2 weeks and charging me £50, returned it in the same state as when I brought it to him. After threatning to sue him in the small claims court he returned my money - the machine is not used that often, but still working.

I'm not sure what to recommend.

This might be a bit silly, but if Jo_anne and bigmuffins both agree, perhaps one could phone the other and they play their Kenwood Chefs to each other over the phone? Exchanging tel nos by Private Message of course. Just a suggestion...

on mother's day last year my daughter offered to make me a cake. She started mixing whilst I was washing up and I turned round thinking the Kenwood was going a bit fast as it was very noisy. She had disappeared in a cloud of flour - at least that's what I thought it was till I saw flames coming out of the back. It was smoke! I turned it off at the wall and grabbed it to put it outside, forgetting that the casing is metal so I burnt my hands.

She has never offered to make another cake.

She did finish off the dinner though whilst I stood with my hands in a bowl of cold water giving instructions.

Anyone got one that works properly for me to listen to?
Or can post instructions on how to dismantle and oil or check if is ok inside?

    Hi bigmuffins,

I am going to try to record mine on my webcam, assuming the sound comes out OK.
I'll let you know how I get on!!!!

P.S. I can remember those punched cards too.

    Thanks Jo_anne - have replied! :T :A

Punched cards, punched tape and computers that were the size of a room! Thought I was the bees knees cos I knew what it was all about (well thought I did!) and my parents thought I was super smart too! Nothing was too much for me then!
Look at me now! In panic cos my mixer sounds 'funny'! :o
Oh how the mighty (egos!) are fallen! ;)
Some would say is down to age - personally I think it is having children that does it!
My parents were exactly the same! Incapable of doing simple things without help!
Threading needles, deciphering instructions, unable to fathom video recorders - I could go on but darent as I am now worse than they were! :o
