Some advice on default showing on Experian report please

My brother went to get a new mortgage after two years, as the fixed term had ended.
He had a mobile phone which he cancelled, but they said he owed them £19 for the last payment. He contacted them about it and they said they would drop the charge, mainly because (I think) he sells their products anyway.
He made the mistake of not getting this in writing. However, after going to get a new mortgage, he was told his application had failed because of a default on his credit report.
He applied to Experian and a default of £19 from the mobile phone company is showing. He has been told he cannot get the favourable rate he hoped for and will have to pay a higher rate - this is with Halifax.
What can he do to get the default removed? I know he should have got it in writing that they were not pursuing the final payment, but what does he do now? He heard nothing from them since they said they wouldn't pursue this last payment until he got his credit check through - ie, no letters asking for payment.
Any advice please? He would quite happily pay the £19 but we're talking more than that now as he cannot get the good mortgage rate he was expecting.
Thanks in advance.

pay it get it marked as such then shop around again halifax are talking rubbish you will get a rate suitable to you as this is totally insignificant ie halifax are swinging the lead here i think0

How does he pay it? Through the phone company?
Is it worth getting a solicitor?
I couldn't understand this tbh as other half had a ccj (not his debt, to be fair) on his file and we have a halifax mortgage.0 -
The solicitor comment may sound a bit hasty but he is hopping mad and we're talking it will cost him more than the £19 if he cannot get the better mortgage rate.0

He needs to phone the company and explain the situation. I know defaults can be removed from credit files by the company that issues them but I'm not sure of the timescale!0

If he still has details of his old account no etc. call up this phone company again. chances are they will have a record of this agreement on their computer system somewhere, esp if he can remember when it was - they are the best people to get it removed. If he still sells products for them he may well have a bit of leeway.
