Fax to Email

I don't receive many faxes - only a couple every year, in fact - so it would be utterly pointless for me to have a fax machine. But how many times do you ring a company and they ask if you have a fax? When you suggest emailing it, they tell you they don't a have a digital copy of the form/document.
The thing is, fax to email often costs. Now, I know about 08 numbers and I'll be glad when they no longer exist, but for the occasional call it's not so much of a problem - particularly when the other person is paying! (And they wouldn't need to pay if they realised their fax machine is probably also a scanner for their computer!)
Some time (years) ago, I signed up GTI Telecom. Their deal is that you register and get a unique number for faxes, which they then (automatically) send to your email address: so no wasted paper or waiting until you get home, if you check your emails when you're out and about. There is no set-up charge YET.
From August this year 0870 numbers are being withdrawn (:T at long last!) so the company are allocating new 0844 numbers, but these usually attract a £25 connection charge, but they are waiving this charge for existing customers.
So, if you sign-up NOW, you'll be given a unique 0870 number (which you can ignore) and then sign up for an 0844 number when the email arrives inviting you to change at no charge. Once the site is changed, the £25 charge will apply so ACT FAST.
Also on the site is 0871 fax-to-email. Avoid this like the plague. They are unlikely to offer a free change since 0871 is set to stay (at least for the time being). There are plans in the pipeline to set regulations in force similar to those for 090 numbers, so just avoid it!
In summary:
- go to www.gtitelecom.com/fax2email and sign up for an 0870 fax number.
- ignore the number you are allocated.
- wait for the email offering a free 0844 fax number.
- use this whenever you need to receive a fax.
(If you ever need to send a fax, Windows has the capability to send it - but you'll need to connect your computer to the phone line (just like when it was dial-up) and then switch on the facility. It's within the control panel.)

Love fax2email and vice versa. We actually use it for our business now through myfax.com for £7.50 a month including sending and receiving hundreds of faxes a month... Much easier to get them straight into your inbox and to be able to send a fax by attaching anything to an email! The Head Honcho (does very little work)0

0870 number are not being withdrawn - 0871 are coming under new regualtion where the price must be displayed and the company /person using the number must register to operate it.0

I've been a long term user of Efax Free (0870) and been informed that our service is being withdrawn end of July due to the new Oftel regs. Efax want me to pay about £10/month for their subscribed service - about £1 per fax with my usage!
Now I have tracked down another 0870 service asking £1.50 pm - just not sure - are 0870s being generally withdrawn or not?
I need a number that can be called from abroad like 0870. Do the new 03z numbers allow calls from abroad? Any really good 03x fax to email deals out there? Any 0870 operators that give a clear statement on how their 0870 offering will last?0 -
It all down to the new OFTEL regs.
My 0870 number that I give to mail order companies and anywhere I register online is being withdrawn at the end of the month :mad:British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -
Expired............British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0

I have not heard of 0870 numbers actually expiring. Only that since the earning ability of them is being curtailed 1st Aug, most free services to the 0870 call recipient are being stopped or changed. The websites of the fax to email providers do not seem to be updated with any info about this imminent change. And the email I just now sent to the Contact Us address of https://www.faxexpert.co.uk just got bounced!0

I am intrigued : how do you get an 0870 or its current equivalent (0871?) and how much does it cost? I am fed up with paying other people and think they should have to cough up in return.0

We have been using sundial telecom for sending in timesheets etc.
Faxes cost 5p per sheet but you do have to pay £2.50 upfront via CC or Paypal.
You can register several email addresses and it seems to work well.

Edit: didn`t read first post properly, Receiving faxes costs £5/month0
