TV license to increase on 1st April. Just heard an add on the radio saying that if your license needs renewing on this date that if you buy it on or before 31st march you pay old fee of £126.50 charge increasing to £131.50. Shame mines not until august.

  • Save £131.50 by not buying one*

*Offer applies only (legally) to those who just use their TV set for non-TV reception purposes (DVDs, videogames, CCTV etc) ;)

    Incorrect !

A Licence is still required if you only play DVD's, games etc on a TV set.

A licence is not required if you do NOT own any equipment capable of receiving TV programs.

    from tvlicensing.co.uk:

"What if I only use a TV to watch videos/DVDs/as a monitor for my games console? Do I still need a licence?

You need to notify us in writing that this is the case and one our Enforcement Officers may need to visit you to confirm that you do not need a licence.

Please write to us including your name, address and the reason you believe that you don't need a licence at:

I did actually say the TV receivers must not be capable of receiving TV programs.

This means you need to remove all aerials and detune every channel on the receiver so it will not receive programs even if someone plugged in an aerial.

This also applies to VCR's, DVD Recorders, computer TV cards, satellite receivers.

If your TV has 128 channels you would need to check every channel to make sure it is not receiving anything.

I'd argue that even if the TV isn't tuned into anything it is still capable of receiving TV programmes. From what others have told me so long as your TV isn't plugged into an aerial socket or preferably, there is no aerial socket in that room, you are still exempt - still doesn't stop those annoying letters though!

Does anyone else not think these adverts are an effing cheek? You are not saving *ANYTHING* by buying the TV licence before 31st March. The price is just going up. There is NO discount for buying early. You cannot "save" any money off the current price. The advert even says if you buy before 31st March you pay the CURRENT price. Well thanks very bloody much TVL, if every shop in the land charged us the current price we'd all be saving fortunes wouldn't we?

Maybe possibly they are doing us a small favour by highlighting that if you are one of the presumably 12th of the TV licence owning population with licences running out this month you should renew before 31st March (which, also presumably you should anyway) but the way it is described in these adverts make it out to be some great discount bargain offer.

To be quite honest I'd like to smack whoever in TV licencing dictates they must conduct business with such a disgraceful attitude towards the general public in the face. A lot.

    Wrong.

    Well, that's stating the obvious!

I believe that is correct because despite the way TVL say it, it's basically if you do actually receive television (ie get a signal and watch/record it on something), the premesis in which you do that has to have a licence. The "if you have equipment that is capable of" stuff I understand to be trying to put a physically provable rule on the basic concept of receiving television.

I even think you can have a TV plugged in, connected to an aerial as long as it remains off or not tuned into any channel. The moment it's on and tuned in you are commiting the offence. I know this is pretty hard to prove one way or the other, and of course why the hell would you have a working television set up but never use it?

I could be wrong, but I think that's the score.

You didn't actually. You said, 'A licence is not required if you do NOT own any equipment capable of receiving TV programs' - That's pretty vague and could quite easily be misconstrued.

Remove all aerials? Are you suggesting that people all legally required have to take down external dishes and aerials? Or simply take the cable out of the TV/TV receiver?

FWIW you don't have to take down any antenna and the detuning is a suggestion from TVL and AFAIK isn't a legal requirement.

Satellite and Freeview receivers can also be used for radio reception, satellite PC cards can be used for radio and internet services.

And TVL would have to be invited in to your home (you have no legal obligation to let them in unless they have a warrant), turn your TV on and check all 128 channels to see if there was a signal!
