Good Quality Digital Camera

Can someone please advise the best place to buy a digital camera. I am useless at specification but am aware that Sony and Fuji are quite good. So whatever deals you are aware of please let me know.....Thanks. I also dont want to spend too much.

If I have posted this on the wrong thread please move it.

Many thanks.

  • I'm sitting here next to my husband & your question piqued his interest. He knows everything about digital cameras (compared to me anyway). The Sony DSC P200 is an amazing camera. We have one, in fact, most of our electronics are Sony. Once you get it you wont need to invest in another for quite a while. Amazon had it for £199.99, but my husband is sure he saw it in Jessops yesterday on sale for £179.00. I did a kelkoo search & found it for 178.99 at lowest (https://www.kelkoo.co.uk). I hope this helps you in your quest.

The best place may well be Jessops - they've been flogging cameras for years and prices are generally reasonable. You can probably get them cheaper on t'web, but that won't give you much idea about whether it feels right.
  • Jessop's pricematches, so keep that in mind. Find the lowest price you can online (use pricerunner & Kelkoo) & print out the offer. My husband & I did that for his DSC-F828 (its an amazing super-camera we got last year, probably too much for your needs). But we went in with a printout, got the camera down from £899 to £500 in Jessops, AND we had them throw in a camera bag to boot. You wont get if you dont ask. Haggle!

I did the same at Jessops when I bought my digital camera (although not as expensive as yours) - I took a print out from ebuyer who had it at £115 opposed to £180 at jessops, and they just matched it for me. I also saved delivery cost this way whereas if I bought it from ebuyer directly it would have costed me additional £5 or so to get it delivered. :j

As long as the company is UK based and has the camera in stock they will match their price. Jessops will phone the company up first to make sure that they have it in stock but as this was ebuyer they obviously couldnt get through to the customer services, so they just took my word for it :p
  • Jessops are fantastic.. They are the most flexible high street store I know of.

One of my friends bought a Panasonic FZ5 (£350 pounds RRP in Jessops) but used the price quoted on the net of £300 to get them to price match. I went in the next week and spoke to the same guy who served her, told him I knew about the price match and offered £290 for the same camera! They actually went for it.. it was just a straight haggle.

In terms of a very good 'reasonable' (not cheap) camera, I'd go for a Canon IXUS 55:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000B5KFGI/ref=br_ce_ts_1/203-6472316-3286317

It's £177 and excellent. I'd avoid sony's as the accessories cost a bomb and you're stuck with sony only bits.

Annother note with Jessops - they'll also give you a reduced cost offer for memory cards and bags.. get a reduced cost bag and ignore the cards, they're cheaper to buy online from shops like mymemoryc.o.uk

I have found Jessops to be both good and bad ............. price matching and/or discounts often depend on how the staff feel at the time.

I now ALWAYS deal only with the manager of my local store and have found her to be excellent in that she is happy to price match. In fact she will try to beat the best price I can get because she says she would rather Jessops have my business than another company.

So if you have no luck in one Jessops store ........... try a different one AND deal with the manager.

As for which camera, I always buy Canon.

I have had 1 Fuji Finepix and 2 Nikon Coolpix cameras in as many years.

It's my opinion that both brands are rubbish and I would advise you to stay away.

Perhaps any camera with "pix" in the name is a bit suspect?

My Nikon coolpix 2100 stopped working a year after I got it (lens wouldn't open fully and it was reporting dead battery with fully charged ones).

Bought a Canon A80 - brilliant camera, if a little big for day-to day. Advised girlfriend's parents to get a canon. They got a IXUS - another great camera if you don't want manual controls. Images are nice and sharp, no post-processing needed.

I'd also advise against sonys - they only take sony memory sticks which are expensive.
