in Cutting tax
Please can anyone help on the following matter.
I work as a utility meter reader, I get an allowance of around 27p per mile which is included in my weekly wage. I use my own personal vehicle for the work (a car).
I have been advised to complete an online form (which seems to be a p87) I have also recently received a p60 form.
What confuses me is to what I am due back. I did around 16,000 from the start of the tax year last year. Please can anyone confirm what I would be due back and how it works ? Do I need to fill in a self assessment tax return as at this rate it would exceed £2,500.
Many thanks in advance, as I am sooo confused.

No, you just complete a P87, or you can do it on a piece of paper. I am surprised that the allowance from yuor employer is taxed thrugh PAYE as its not taxable.
Anyway, assuming the allowance you receive is taxed at source, you would claim 40p pm for the first 10,000 miles and 25p pm thereafter. You would receive tax relief for this mileage and I make it about £1,100 based on the info you have given, assuming you are a basic rate taxpayer.£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths :beer:0 -
Many Thanks for the reply, Looking at my pay, it doesnt look like the mileage is taxed. It quotes gross pay and Gross pay for tax . The gross pay for tax does not include my mileage allowance. Do you know if I have to include The p60 with the p87 ?0

OK, so if the mileage is not taxed, you only claim the difference between the HMRC rate and what you have been paid. Yes, send your P60 with the P87.£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths :beer:0

Ive just worked out my correct mileage as 16,340 miles. In section 2 it asks to add my total mileage allowance relief which is £5585 then it asks "Minus total mileage allowance payments received"
Probably a silly question but what is this and where do I get it from ?
many thanks if anyone can help ?0 -
In your first post you said your employer paid you 27p per mile. This is the amunt received - I guess you will need to add all your totals from your payslips, unless your employer gives you a statement of what he has paid.£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths :beer:0

Thanks again, guessed it was that but thought I would check.0

If your expenses claim exceeds £2500, it will be dealt with through Self Assessment.0

You will be able to claim tax relief on 13p for the first 10000 miles.
The other 6000 or so you should have been taxed on 2p for each mile as the amount you can have paid tax free is 10000 per year @40p/mile and @25p/mile for anything over that
So approx you will be entitled to a net amount of about £250.
hope this helps,

I agree with all this, just a reminder you can claim for the the year just gone and the previous 5 tax years if you have the P60s/payslips.
By the way who do you work for?0
