Google VAT Refund

About a year ago, I spent £10 on Google AdWords to advertise a personal website. 21% Irish VAT was included in this amount (£1.74).

A few weeks ago, I received an email from Google saying they think I use the account for business purposes and asked me to check settings on their website. Their website wouldn't let me choose Personal so I just left it as it was and didn't put down a VAT number (I'm not registered).

Today I received a cheque which was post marked as coming from Sweden. The return address was "PO Box 4037, Buffalo, NY 14240-4037".

Inside was an cheque (which looked a bit different to most normal UK cheques). I has a sort code, account number and cheque number. It is drawn on "Citbank CRS Account, Canada Square, Canary Wharf, London E14 5LB".

It says it is from "IE VAT Refund, Gordon House, Barrow Street, Dublin 4".

I'm assuming this is a refund of the VAT from Google, although it doesn't really make that clear.

What do I do with this cheque? It is only £1.74. I thought that under EU law you had to pay VAT to the country you were buying the goods from (i.e. Ireland).

What do I have to do now? Just pay in the cheque at the bank or do I tell someone?

They think that you are VAT registered. For that amount, I really wouldn't worry. Bank it and spend it on sweeties.
