Returning to work after illness

in Cutting tax
I'm starting a new job after being ill for a few years.
My main concern is that I never claimed any benefits, I lived at my parents and needed little money, I also took a few contributions from friends. Will I have to explain this to hmrc after filling in a P46?
I also did a little work from home and never declared myself self-employed or paid tax for it, this was a few hundred pounds a year. Should I declare this now? How should I do this? And what sort of penalty will I face?
Thank you for your help.

Provided you are confident that you did not owe tax at any time Then I wouldn't worry about the few hundred you earned. You are obligated to tell HMRC if, in any tax year, you owe tax. Providing any casual earnings are covered by your personal allowance then I would say you are OK.
HMRC may send you a form to complete to explain your earnings situation since you were last employed but so long as there is no tax due you should e OK.If it’s not important to you, don’t consume it0
