am i right in thinking that a full system restore on my primary vista  partition will not affect my second partition running windows 7 as i want to shrink the vista volume further to allow windows 7 more space but it wont let me despite having 129 GB free. i assume this is to do with the positioning of the files on the vista disk and a full restore will correct this?

if you mean from manufacturers disks/partitions, then it probably will erase the win 7 partition.
also i think vista has a limit on how much you can shrink the disk so you may be better off using something like gparted0
