I wanna..buy an alto saxophone

Hi all,
Long time listener, first time caller as they say on Frasier!
I used to play the alto and tenner saxophones years ago, and have decided it's time to pick up the horn again and get back into the swing of it - excuse the pun!
Are there any knowledgable folk out there who can recommend a good alto sax make? Back in my day, Yamaha was highly praised (if I remember correctly) but this may not be the case anymore. Has anyone seen any bargains out there? I'd consider second-hand but ideally it'd be brand new.
I have a budget of £1,000, although obviously I'd rather it be as cheap as possible. Up to £200 I could easily accept; £200-£500 I'd pay with a grimace and £500 plus, well, I'd better sound like Kenny G when I play from the get-go!
I was a pretty good player as a young lass so am confident it won't be a short term investment. Sadly, back then, I had to give it up to focus more time on my studies, which isn't an issue anymore.
Thanks for any help - Tiger
