I'd say the important thing is to limit your colours then you don't need a whole pile of different colours of tights, socks, shoes and so on to go with different outfits. You can't go wrong with, say, black and white for your core items. Spend good money on those items and add then colour with cheap and cheerful T shirts, jewellery and so on. You can change those every season according to your mood.
Then when you go to the wardrobe you know everything is going to match without you thinking about it!
A couple of pairs of well fitting jeans
A black suit - the best quality you can afford.
A black dress - the best you can afford.
White shirts, vest tops and T shirts.
Black and brown shoes/boots.
A trench coat.
Get the best quality accessories you can as they make an outfit.
Can I stress the importance of good socks ?
Black socks with brown trousers in a big no-no.
The only place I've found decent plain brown socks is M&S.
Next have brown but they are more for a child, they are strangely patterned, ok if you are about 12 years old.
I got lots of plain brown socks in Boots. I was lucky to get them on clearance, but they still have good brown socks.
I always thought you should match your socks to your shoes, which should make your legs look longer. So brown shoes=brown socks, and black shoes=black socks. And you can wear either colour shoes with brown trousers.
