Hi there

OH has been talking about getting me an engagement ring so I have been having a look around to see what's out there.

Now, before I try and explain what I like, please bear in mind I am pretty clueless about jewellery but I'll try my best to describe what I'm after!

Okay. I really like the idea of a ring in a white metal (white gold okay, platinum preferably or titanium) with a single square-cut gemstone, in a vibrant hue of blue, so either sapphire or tanzanite. Nothing else really, not too fussed about how thick the band is, or the style, if it has tiny diamonds either side that's okay but equally fine if not (though would prefer not.)

I've not come across anything yet that quite fits the bill, the closest I've seen is this ring in white gold: http://www.alphaimports.com/1-carat-tanzanite-solitaire-ring-in-14k-white-or-yellow-gold-p-23486.html but obviously that's not square!

I'm finding it also difficult to search because of the fact it's not primarily a diamond engagement ring so I've tried searching for just a tanzanite ring and so have loads to plough through!

Any tips or good gemstone jewellery sites I might find useful - bearing in mind my lack of knowledge about jewellery?

Why not visit the Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham?

There's loads of specialist shops close together in a small area (not too far from the city centre) and you can browse as much as you like. Even better, you can talk to the person making the rings in some of the shops and tell them exactly what you would like.

Don't worry - they're used to dealing with people who have vague ideas about what they like. You can set your own budget range and end up with something unique.

My white gold tanzanite and diamond engagement ring was from Hinds.

It's not on the website but in the shop they had a few different ones.

I know its a "high street shop" but as soon as I saw my ring I loved it;)

QVC have a selection of tanzanite rings - I picked up a white gold and tanzanite dress ring from them without any problems and my best mate had her engagement ring from them (a fire opal and diamond ring). Many of their rings come with certificates so you know you are getting rhe real thing.

I had my ring made from Crown Jules in the Birmingham Jewellery Quarter.

It's not a standard ring as I wanted an emerald in something that wouldn't overpower my small hands! We discussed it, they designed it - I'm thrilled with it!!

    Congratulations and good luck

Mine is from there and I love it, totally. Came from main site, however, they do have an auction room also, you will see top right of main page, they have some absolute bargains. Mine is very different and more importantly did not cost loads, which isn't what it's about. Also, not everyone will have the same ring as you.

Its worth remembering that any ring in yellow gold can be turned into white gold quite easily and cheaply, I saw a ring I really loved but it only came in yellow gold and I explained that to the assistant and they said it could be sent away and treated to become white gold, they did and its perfect, it does have to be re-treated every couple of years. I'm really sorry but I can't remember the name of the process.

don't get anything on the high street if you can avoid it. IF you find anythng you do like at a high street jeweller, take a photo of it to someone in the bham jewellery quarter or AT LEAST an independent jeweller and i guarantee you will get something higher quality at a better price.

My fiance had my ring (and subsequently our wedding rings) made at a small working jewellers. Its white gold and gorgeous. I have an emerald cut diamond but a working jeweller will do any jewel you want and its exactly how you want it. Ours is called Daltons in Leeds and he's brilliant. I'd avoid the high street as they are expensive.
  • Hi,

Diamond engagement rings come in different shapes, sizes, and price ranges. You can go for the traditional solitaire, which comes in many different cuts. Diamonds can be heart shaped too. The classic engagement ring is generally composed of two parts, a diamond and a setting. For the best value, find the setting she'll love then devote the remainder of your budget to a beautiful, certified diamond.

It is always important to choose engagement rings with great care as it is meant to be worn for a lifetime. Always be careful when you choose the material as well as the size of the ring.
