Living out of my freezer!

LOL, not literally!

I've dramatically overspent on my grocery budget this month, :o mainly because I'm currently on sick leave, and am eating a lot out of boredom (I've put on 7lb in the last 3 weeks!)

With only 5 days to go until pay day, I've decided that I'm not going to do a shop this weekend, and will buy nothing (other than milk) until Friday! Now this may not seem a big thing to some of you, but it is for me!

I do have some veg in the freezer, and several packs of frozen fruit for breakfast smoothies, along with some veg in the fridge, but I'm not sure that will last all week, especially as its half term and DD will be home! Having said that, it is only 5 days, and I'm sure that 5 days not quite hitting the 5 a day won't have a real detrimental effect on us!

I'd be very grateful for any hits and tips anyone might have!

Soup is a good way of making the most of veg/left overs, and is delicious and filling with home made bread if you have any flour and yeast.

Your frozen fruit would also make good desserts, say with custard or yoghurt. Smoothies for breakfast are a bit of an extravagance (depending on what else you are having).

Maybe if you post what you have in your store cupboard people could come up with suggestions?

    Thanks for your reply Pandora!

I'm not sure I've explained myself properly - the challenge is more about me actually using the contents of my freezer - there's plenty in it! - than needing any help in working out what to do with what's in it, though I'll know where to come if I need any inspiration!!

My only concern is that we won't hit our 5 a day, as I'm not sure the veg we have in will last the week, but I think at this stage I'll cross that bridge when I come to it! Popping to the shops to buy a head of brocolli won't be the end of the world, as long as I resist buying anything else there!

We tend to have smoothies for breakfast as a meal in their own right - I soak a mix of linseed, pumpkin, sunflower and sesame seeds overnight in apple juice then add some defrosted fruit and whizz - yummy - so this will meet at least 1 or maybe 2 portions - after that -we'll have to see!

    Thanks again!

I don't think you will come to a lot of harm if you don't 'eat five a day' I have survived ok for the past 67 years without too much of a problem.Whe I was a little girl the thought of eating 5 a day wouldn't have been viable as there was a war on and to get anything to eat was in itself a trick that my wonderful Mum achieved with great skill. I can understand about you want to be eating healthily but why not just have some porridge for a change thats fairly inexpensive and healthy.I make mine with a cup of oats to one and a half cups of water and a bowl of that at breakfast will fill me up until lunchtime. veggies in soup will satisfy your healthy eating diet and its a great way to use up any veggies that have got a bit sorry looking, bung some lentils in as well to bulk out your soup I can make about 3 litres in my SC for less than 50p. Re; your 'popping to the shops' take just enough cash to buy your broccoli and then you won't be tempted. if you feel like eating and its very easy to 'nibble' when your at home then do something else to take your mind off it ,go for a walk, drink a large glass of water,de-clutter a drawer, look through old photo's, anything that distracts your mind from munching. Make list of the things you need to do and work your way through them I am a great list maker and everyday I have a 'to-do' list.
I used to work for a very wealthy chap and he insisted that every employee had a to-do list made every morning and worked through.
Good luck, it will be a case of mind and money over matter I think.
  • You could post what all you have in your freezer and how many you have to cater for.

I am sure all the amazing OS folk on here will be able to help you out :D
