I know it's very good if you suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome as I used to take it. I think it's also good for general digestion problems and heartburn.

If you google aloe vera juice benefits there are loads of pages.

Placebo's work better than trialed medications for IBS so it isn't surprising that the more hype there is for a product the more effective people believe it to be. That's fine as if you feel better that is almost as good as being better. There is so little published research on Aloe Vera and IBS that it is only worth considering if you have nothing better to spend your money on.

As low grade mucosal inflammation and abnormal intestinal motility are accepted mechanisms which alter gut function and generate symptoms of IBS, there is logic to ensuring your daily intake of omega 3 from oily fish (for it's anti-inflammatory properties) meets Food Standards Agency recommendations. 4 portions of 140g a week. As Soluble fibre (psyllium, ispaghula, calcium polycarbophil) showed significant improvement whereas insoluble fibre (corn, wheat bran), in some cases, worsened the clinical outcome these may be a better bet and for both it's omega and insoluble fibre content it would be worth giving freshly ground linseed a trial.

As indicated by the effectiveness of placebos in this condition the Brain/Gut interaction is important and therefore using Vitamin D to ensure the omega 3 (dha) is properly utilised in the brain to reduce depressive tendencies is also worth considering particularly in folk who recognise "seasonality" in their condition.

But try to avoid those connected with multi level marketing as their prices have to recompense multilayers of management commissions. Far better to use remedies that have been fully researched and the results published In IBD, poor Quality of Life predisposes to use of Complementary Alternative Medications. Conversely, use of CAM may serve as a marker of emotional or social unease in these patients.

Before taking Aloe vera visit https://www.helpforibs.com/news/newsletter/strawshort052604.html
scroll down the page to read about Aloe vera.

For me the potential dangers outweigh the potential benefits.

Chatty123 why do you want to take Aloe vera?some people who promote this product make loads of cash.

I would never take a health supplement without doing lots of research.

Chatty123 have you tried taking a soluble fiber supplement? as mentioned in Teds reply.

You could try Psyllium Husks half price at https://www.healthspan.co.ukclick on shop,
click on constipation then Psyllium husks, as long as you take this you MUST follow the instructions take with plenty of water for more info https://www.helpforibs.com/supplements/ click on soluble fiber supplements.

I am no medical expert so before taking any supplement CONSULT YOUR GP about your constipation.

Also avoid alcohol and fatty foods as much as possible and drink plenty of water.

    Good luck

I have to disagree with most of the posts. I think aloe and complimentary products are a very personal choice and some people benefit better than others. Many conventional medicines work on some and not on others which is just the same with more natural remedies. I agree that with all treatments there are risks, natural or not. My personal experience is that drinking Aloe Vera juice has vastly improved my quality of life. I suffered extreme tiredness, IBS and had very severe post natal depression. I have tried loads of tablets to no avail (in February i was on 21 tablets a day after being discharged from hospital). Since taking the Aloe juice i am down to one tablet a day. Believe me i am no happy, clappy, new age hippy. If anything i was convinced it would not work. Why would it, nothing else had??

I would recommend anyone to be open minded with natural remedies, all medicine has it's place and it may be the one for you.

There is limited controlled evidence indicating efficacy of traditional Chinese medicines, aloe vera gel, wheat grass juice, Boswellia serrata and bovine colostrum enemas in ulcerative colitis. If there was more research supporting the use of Aloe Vera I would be more convinced. The problem with conditions where placebo treatments are so effective is that it is very difficult to explain logically why they work. Still if you are happy I'm sure it is best for you.
