Hi all,
As Im due for discharge on the 5th:j does anyone know how long it will be before I can get a mainstream bank acc with cheque book? Dont want gtee card or OD but have been lost without chequebook.
Also Natwest have a machine similar to the coinstar machine in the branch near me but the difference is it doesnt charge, as Im a cabbie too now this would make my life so much easier, are natwest discharged Br friendly.
Also will I need to amend my credit file before applying or not?
Thanks in advance

Hi ITBS,
There really are no consistent guidelines where bank accounts are concerned. One branch of a bank will give you full banking facilities whereas the same bank at a different branch won't.
Generally speaking NatWest are "bankrupt unfriendly" but that depends how you answer the questions posed. If you were to "forget" that you'd ever been declared bankrupt some branches of NW will check; others won't.
It's certainly more of an art than a science, which is good if you're artistic, and bad if you're not. I've always found that a little "artistic licence" can be very effective.:D
And of course, if you're ever found to have been "economical with the actualities" then blaming an "administrative error" or " a lack of concentration" is very trendy at the moment.
At the moment I'm feeling very trendy;how are you feeling?
Regards

I bank with natwest and have had a basic step account for the past year of bankruptcy but they issued me with a cheque book ages ago which I've used only twice but successfully. I was recently offered an account upgrade, but when i told them I was bankrupt they said I'd have to wait 3 years until I could get a standard account. The bizarre thing is the computers at the branch keep flashing up my account as eligible for an upgrade, its only when I answer "yes I've been bankrupt" in one of their little tick boxes that they turn me down. As someone else said, you could always 'forget'

I've had a Co-op Cashminder account for a couple of years since my discharge and don't see any need to upgrade at all. I make all payments by online transfer or by my Visa card and see no need for a cheque book.
Cheques are virtualy dead anyway. I would imagine in a couple of years it will only be business accounts which get a cheque book issued with them.
I meanwhile, am running a business turning over £2k a week through my Cashminder account!0 -

I chose a Natwest account when changing from Lloyds TSB (I owed them money). I got a solo card and it was an account for people with extremely poor credit ratings. I was declared BR in April and the AIB (I'm in Scotland) contacted them. I am prepared for them to close my account but so far have heard nothing. My advisor at CAB did think they might keep it open seeing as it was a step account.0
