Warning about Nikon cameras

Be careful about buying Nikon cameras. The company apparently has very strict policies when it comes to repairing their own merchandise. According to these two web sites

Nikon will refuse to service your camera if you do not purchase a "country specific" model in the country in which you wish to have it serviced. This is very problematic for buyers of used cameras (who might not know where the camera was originally purchased) and for those who travel and need repair.

Most comapnies do not offer an international warrenty on their products.
  • yeah mr fishbulb i can understand what you are saying if this was a waranty issue
but from what im reading in th links above ... they will not repair it even if you are paying!!! effectivly making any nikon product throw away excep in the country it was originally intended for!!!!
so if you buy a nikon product of ebay and it turns out to be from usa does this mean they will not repair it? or if you buu a nikon product on your holidays if it breaks you just dump it ????
i can understand themm saying no to warranty work but not for payed for repairs

Do all UK suppliers (i.e. shops) have to supply UK ones?
  • The Nikon Uk site has a list of (online) retailers who they recommend. So I'd always buy fom one of those that way you know you're getting UK non-grey stock and it should be covered under the Nikon UK/Eu warranty.

I am looking to buy a decent zoom lens for my Nikon D50 and read somewhere that whereas camera bodies are only covered by national warranties, lenses on the other hand, usually come with international warranties. I'd be interested to know if anybody can confirm that?

I can't vouch for the Nikon lenses, but I know that the Canon lenses all come with International warranties (AFAIK). I wouldn't be surprised if the Nikon ones did too. Maybe worth dropping Nikon UK an email?

I think this has been mis-reported, and I don't think that Nikon Europe would be allowed to do it (all the cases I've heard of concern Nikon USA turning away products not sourced through the USA).

I currently need a warranty repair done on my nikon digital SLR which I bought in the USA. I've just emailed the European Nikon service centre and they've said no problem - I just have the pay £4.95 towards the return postage. Can't say fairer than that - I was prepared to send it back to the USA if I had to.
