I'm so tired.

I haven't slept since Tuesday  and even then it was only for a few hours.

We had to go out today and I think I just kept going on adrenalin. My balance has been pretty poor these last few days and I've had a couple of falls - no doubt the tiredness has added to the problems with my balance.

So, what non-medical things do you do to help you sleep?

If you opt for the bubble bath, try and get a Lavender scented one. Or a Lavender pillow spray.
If your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)

    Hi,

Sorry you aren't sleeping. Here are the suggestions we had from when we did sleep studies.

Try to get into a routine. Go to bed at the same time every night, even if you know you won't sleep. Then, if you are still awake after about 20 mins -get up and do something (not too stimulating but maybe reading a book) but you MUST get out of the bedroom. Your brain must think "bedroom=sleep". Then if you feel sleepy go back to bed and try again. repeat as necessary. Get up at the same time each day (even if still tired) to get body/brain into a routine.
-get a bedtime routine. Try to do "wind down" things, like have a relaxing bath (massage?) and milky drink about an hour before bed.
-Make the bedroom a stress free zone, to not remind you of anything bad (I have to remove work stuff!). Dark curtains, quiet and cool. Write down anything on your mind on a pad beside the bed so you can leave it until the morning.
-Don't drink caffine (including cola) alcohol or spicey foods after 6pm.

I would have a try of these things, they sound mad but do work. Hope you get some sleep soon. If its still occuring after a few days it may be worth seeing your GP. It could be some medication you are on which can be adjusted or they could give you something to help. (I like Calms, a herbal tablet and take B vitamins to help de-stress me.)

  • Sorry you aren't sleeping. It gets to be a vicious circle doesn't it? Can't sleep - worry about not sleeping - so can't sleep.

I think having a TV in the bedroom is a very bad idea. Also watching anything too excitable or upsetting on TV last thing is not good. Only watch nice stuff so you go to bed feeling happy!

If you have got a Walkman-type CD player then Talking books are good, the more boring the better. You can get them from the Library. The only problem is you might wake up with the headphones round your neck but I've not managed to strangle myself yet so you'll probably be ok!

I would second the milky drink idea but make it a very small one.

Is your pillow comfortable? I've slept much better since splashing out on a decent memory foam pillow (hasn't helped my memory though!)

Don't have your bedroom too warm, you'll wake yourself up kicking the covers off.

Radio 4 always worked for me.

Also documentaries. I like many of them but they make me sleepy

I like the suggestion, but sadly not possible :(

With all the tablets I'm taking, I wouldn't wake up for ages  :D

As mentioned by savemoney, radio 4 or 5 does it for me! On quiet, listen then drift off and then it's several hours later! OK headphones on upside down are better and more comfy, ie the headband under chin rather than on head!

Have you tried the herb valerian? Will it work with your medication - you may need to ask GP or research but it is gently effective for me.

    Best wishes.
