New job making me pay for CRB check - this right?

Options
Hi

Have just got myself a PT job at a college, just working in the library. They've sent me the bumpf through the post - and the letter says that they are going to charge me the £36 for a CRB check, and this will be deducted from my first wageslip.

Is this normal? I'm a bit annoyed as its only a 12 hour per week job, meaning my first day will basically be working for nothing! Unsure what to do really - was thinking of ringing them to ask if I really do have to pay.

Anybody got any similar experiences?

All I can say is that we (small charity) don't charge employees. What is frustrating is paying for someone's CRB check and then they leave quickly!

they usually state in the job ad whether they expect you to pay yourself.

I have seen jobs advertised with it both ways.

so yes, it does sometimes happen

Where I used to work (an airport), a new employee had to pay for their disclosure and the cost was reimbursed after they had completed 6 months service.

Existing employees had it reimbursed immediately.
