Self Employed and Income Support.....

Hello Everyone

Just wandering if anyone can help, my partner is wanting to set up his own company and go self employed, but as like new business you need some kind of help to get you by whilst you are trying to earn a wage....Anyway just wandering if he will be entitled to Income Support?

Or any other benefits like WTC etc...

Thanks in advance

    Yes he may be.

It's very complicated due to the fact that their is more than one way to be considered self-employed.

If he is earning at the moment and being made redundant his best bet is to sign on first then tell them that he is going to become self-employed.

The reason for this is that many people who are self-employed are told by job centre staff that they are not entitled to any benefits even when they are. And as you can't claim back benefits the easiest way to sort out claims is to be on benefits first.

If you can't do this then I suggest you go to the CAB first with full details of your income and ask them what benefits you can claim.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

  • My partner is currently on Contributions based JSA, but is due to end soon and then he has to go onto Income Based JSA, but he was told he may not be entitled to it because I work more then 24 hours a week, so he was thinking of setting up his business with going self employed and myself with be reducing my hours to 12 per week, due to long term sick..... So all in all he maybe entitled to it or not

    Thanks
