Q: are school leavers entitled to unemployment benefit?

my middle daughter finishes her GCSE exams in mid june,
and is therefore looking for a job.

q: is she entitled to sign on for unemployment benefit?

also she is due to got to college in September (assuming exam results are ok), would this exclude her from claiming?

The rules and exceptions are quite complicated but, no, she's not allowed to claim it during the gap between formal education and further education. Child benefit and child tax credit will continue to be payable.

Young people aged 16 and 17 can only claim benefits in cases of exceptional hardship, whether remaining in education or not. Don't forget that you'll carry on getting child benefit and child tax credit for her as she's staying in education.

NO!! You can carry on getting CB and CTC until she's 20, if she's in full time, non advanced further education. (School or college).

You should still be getting CB and CTC until the end of August.

Seriously... why are benefits the first thing that people think of these days??! If she's going into further education she is not available for work and therefore can't just sign on for the dole or whatever it is. What your daughter does is go into your local town and go into every single shop and ask if they need weekend/holiday staff. Repeat every day until she finds a job. My niece did this and had 2 job offers within 4 days. Then within 4 months she found a better paid weekend job but had to work both jobs for a month because they couldn't find anyone to replace her in the first job!
