You've possibly been made aware of this, but just wanted to post as there are a lot of these ads about at the moment....
I saw an ad for home data entry - so sent an email to enquire - and this was the reply:
Thank you for your response.
A Data Entry Processor/Home Typist position requires that you have a reliable computer with constant Internet access and capabilities, a valid E-mail account, basic Internet knowledge, and minimal typing skills.
You must also be able to conduct yourself in a professional manner. This includes having excellent grammar and spelling when communicating with clients via E-mail.
In addition to the above requirements, you MUST be able to follow instructions closely and completely! You will do all contact via E-mail, so you will not be required to call anyone at anytime. This allows you to work whichever hours are most convenient for you (days, night, or weekends). You will be processing applications, as well as filling out forms in specific company databases (this tends to be tedious at times, so please be sure that you have the patience to do so before proceeding).
This is why you will need to have basic Internet knowledge, though the training provided will give you step-by-step instructions on how to perform these tasks properly.
There are no “down-times” with this position, so you will have a constant flow of work to complete. THIS IS NOT A GET RICH QUICK SCHEME, so if that is what you are looking for please do not pursue this opportunity.
You will be paid up to £10.00 for each application completed.
The amount of money you make each week is entirely up to you, and how much time and effort you are willing to put in with this position. A form will normally take about 10minutes to complete however, it may vary depending on your typing speed.
The average person makes £250.00 - £500.00 each week and there is always money to be made.
When you have been accepted as a Data Entry Clerk/Home Typist, you are considered an Independent Contractor. This means that your taxes will not be taken out; therefore, you will not be provided with any tax forms. THIS IS ENTIRELY YOUR RESPONSIBILITY. The training provided will go more information about what to do with your taxes.
You will receive your pay through PayPal or whichever online payment portal you choose. When an application is completed, the money will be credited to your PayPal account, which can be withdrawn into your bank account at your leisure.
You can read about the security policies at www.paypal.com.
There is a one-time non-refundable fee for the training package, £3.99).
This includes all processing fees and training costs. We offer professional online support for as long as you may need us. This is a one-time fee, and there will be no other charges to you.
We must accept this fee to cover training costs, processing fees, as well as to ensure that only serious applicants apply. This is a non-refundable fee, so be sure that you understand what you are doing before sending in your payment for the training materials.
This fee will not be waived for anyone, and cannot be deducted from your first pay. This is because if you do not process applications, you will not have a first pay, and we will have already taken the time to set you up, and train you.
You will need a word processing program in order to perform this position successfully (MS Word, Works, Notepad, etc.)
Most applicants typically complete the training within 24 hours or less. However, you can do this at your leisure. Keep in mind that the sooner you go through the training materials, the sooner you will START earning money.
I will be able to be contacted via E-mail at anytime after you have received your training materials to help you, or answer any questions you may have.
If you are still serious, and are willing to put forth some time and effort, if you are ready to proceed. Please go to http://www.paypal.com, create your account if you don’t already have one by following the on screen instructions, log in to your account and then click on "Send Money", and send the fee of £3.99 to: ******. When you have made payment please email me to your earliest convenience with
‘Payment made’ in the subject box, so I can get the materials sent out to you immediately.
Yours Sincerely,
Human Resources

It all sounded very professional, and I thought for 3.99, what have I got to lose, if it works - ace!
So, I sent the payment, and got the 'training pack' - which advises you to post ads, like this girl did, in as many places as you can find and they recommend you charge 9.99, to tell people to do the same thing!
And in the training pack it says :

Anyhow, just a warning - I guess you could make money in this way, but morally, I couldnt rip off people thinking that this is a valid job - I've lost 3.99, which realistically isnt a fortune, but it sounds so professional that people may be inclined to pay more.

I think I've seen that before, and, like you thought 3.99 isn't too much to lose, but thankfully, had a niggling doubt kept in my head, NEVER pay upfront for something.
There are probably so many people that think 3.99 isn't that much...0 -
3.99 is gonna be a lot for that particular girl... when she has however many people paying her that amount each!! Wonder how many people actually respond? I certainly wouldnt have done had it been the 9.99 'recommended' in the 'training pack' charge!0

Are you able to open a dispute with paypal to get your £3.99 back, or is their "Remember" section enough to stop any dispute claim?
Might be worth a try, as I wouldn't think Paypal would want to be linked to something similar to a scam.
I know when you buy something on ebay you have a few weeks in which to open a dispute, so it might be the same for other things paid for by paypal.0 -
It's nice of you to post the warning, but the fact that you paid £3.99 simply gives them reason to carry on. They rely on really, really stupid people paying them £3.99 which gives them a huge income.
I really hate stupid people because they are the ones who keep spam going (I hate the spammers a tiny bit more - but not much).

I put people that post silly unhelpfull things above people that make an error of judgement.0 -

Please remember this site's basic forum etiquette about being nice to other moneysavers. People have taken the time and trouble to post on here and whilst constructive criticism might be useful, personal insults are not.
There's no such thing as a stupid question, and even if you disagree courtesy helps.0 -

Julie, was that post at all necessary or helpful?
fleagle, open a dispute with Paypal for the £3.99; there's nothing much else you can do to harrass these scumbags.0 -
I've heard about this scam from years ago, you used to get adverts in the papers for making money at home, and you had to send £5. Some dj on GLR sent off for it, and got a letter back saying "place ads in the paper for making money at home, charge £5, and send them a copy of this letter" !!0
