Do any stores still accept cheques?

Hi all!

Hope I'm posting this in the right place...

Does anyone know of any high street stores that still accept cheques with a cheque guarantee card?
Any help would be gratefully received as I'm in the classic situation (that we all come across) of having 4 birthdays this weekend to buy presents for but only get paid on tuesday and it's already been a heavy month financially (a family birthday, wedding and christening, etc... within 3 weeks). I got rid of my credit cards 8yrs ago and don't wish to go down that route again.

Thanks!

Some online ones do, but I have yet to see one actual store that does. I am sure there are some as cheque books still exist.

I asked about 18 months ago if John Lewis would take a cheque for a pair of trainers I wanted to get, they looked at me like I had tried to suggest fraud- the answer was a very stern "NO WE DO NOT TAKE CHEQUES" with a look that said "How very dare you..." and 'back away from the till, and walk as fast and as far as you can...'- note to self, John Lewis do NOT take cheques. (Or offer customer service!)

I think as long as you have adequate funds in your checking account, most mid to large-size retailers will accept personal checks.
