help! I've got wrinkles!

I don't know where to start with wrinkle cream. I'm a bit of a hippy really, I don't wear make-up and have no idea about moisturisers having only ever used baby lotion occasionally.

I've been taking water tablets for a couple of months and while it's lovely to lose some of the puffiness from my face I've realised today that I'm wrinkled around the mouth - laughter lines are they called? They're in the same place as my skin creases when I smile.

My mum isn't wrinkled and I don't think any of my older friends or relatives are. Wrinkle cream is never really discussed by anyone I know, so I'd appreciate a bit of advice.

I want something that will improve my skin, rather than something to paper over the cracks. I'm not after a flawless face for putting make-up onto, just skin that's softer and in better condition.

Is the new boots cream any good? what about the new avon cream?

I know you're taking 'water tablets', but are you still drinking lots of water? That's the cheapest way to plump up your skin. Is your doc still monitoring the diuretics, sometimes they can be just a bit too effective?

Not be nosey (well maybe?), but I wonder how old you are, different creams suit different ages. Also I wonder what your colouring is? Some of my very fair/ blonde friends' skin has wrinkled earlier. Could better recommend cream if we knew this.

What do you cleanse your face with? If soap and water, which soap?

If your regime is no make-up and baby lotion then presumably you have no sun protection on your face  (Most foundations and skin creams contain SP15). Quick! Slap something on straight away and every day for the rest of your life!!!!!

Are you a smoker, that can accelerate lines and wrinkles?

I started using Rosehip Oil (Rosa Mosqueta) after seeing it recommended on here. It's wonderful for the skin. I only use it once a week on my face but more often on my hands and it smooths and moisturises brilliantly. The bottle I bought is going to last for ages so it's moneysaving too!

I'd like to second Bronnie's advice about drinking enough water and would add that a healthy diet is needed for good skin too.

I'm 37 and have fair skin with freckles. I cleanse with avon clearskin - I get spots every 2 weeks.

The tablets are to sort out my hormones (PCOS) and the doctor just asks for an occasional blood test.

I realise I should have thought about wrinkles and the sun before now, but it just didn't occur to me. I don't smoke or drink, and I wear sunscreen on holiday. My family have good skin and the only wrinkled friend is a heavy smoker so I suppose I just assumed it wouldn't happen to me.

Having had a quick look at older threads about wrinkles it seems I should be wearing a factor 15 cream every day - oops!

Argh! I've just read your post and I've just started meds for my PCOS -Metformin. I don't want more wrinkles!!
I've just started cleansing my face with the oil cleansing method and it has really improved the condition. I have really oily skin but recently started getting dry patches too (prob the meds) and this seems to have sorted it out.
I try to wear SPF 15+ day cream when out and about (I'm very pale) though I often forget. Been given the new day/night Avon one from my mum (was that a hint??) sinks in well and doesn't leave an oily residue.
Will be reading this thread with interest to get more tips!

Hi, I've taken metformin before and it didn't give me wrinkles, you're probably safe lol! I'm taking spiro, it's different to metformin. The only side effect to metformin that I remember was diarrhoea for a few days when I first started it. My spots cleared up after a few months, I loved it :)

I've got an avon day cream but it makes my eyes sting, and my face feels like it's burning. My skin is sensitive so some things burn. I had the same problem with loreal revitalift (I think that's what it was called, I tried a free sample).

Since posting earlier i've rifled through the cupboard and found a tube of olay so I'll use that in the meantime, while finding out what I should use.

aaaaaaahhh and relax! lol! Good news about the metformin. thanks ;)
Really good for sensitive skin are the Lush moisturisers -although they start at about £10. I love oil of ulay too. You sound like you are doing all the right things, I think good skin is more what you eat/drink/ don't smoke & genetics than what you slap on but I think we can help it along.
I wonder if I should use an eye wrinkle-be-gone cream but these always make my eyes sting or the rest of my face greasy.

Since I started oil cleansing, not the exact process detailed on this board, (I'm too lazy!), simply massaging in almond oil and wiping off to cleanse, followed by a rinse of water, my skin has been greatly improved, cleaner and fresher looking, softer, plumper and more' balanced'.

I tried it cos I was interested in the theory that commercial cleansers stripped too much out of your skin, causing you to spend more money on their products trying to replace what was stripped out and also because I wear quite an enduring foundation and was spending a lot on cleanser. In fact my skin has improved so much, I am often just using a tinted moisturiser now, as for the first time EVER I don't feel like my skin needs so much coverage!

I have also find I need LESS face cream as my skin does not need to so much, whereas before oil cleansing, my skin used to be thirstier for it!

I'm older than you, but my concerns are loss of tone and sagging, been lucky so far with wrinkles! After experimenting, I am very pleased with Boots NO7 Protect and Perform cream. I've found it really impressive, maybe someone else will comment on its efficacy for wrinkles. Its always on my list for Mother's Day, birthdays etc! I would go round the beauty counters and see if you can get any sample creams, maybe asking for hypo-allergenic ones if your skin seems sensitive. Its way too expensive to be buying and finding out it's the wrong choice. I think you can get quite a good impression from a couple of applications. Some of the more expensive brands do come in larger containers than the around a tenner ranges and gram for gram do last longer too( especially if you combine with oil- cleansing) , so you need to factor that into your price comparisons!

Anyway, keep drinking the water and slapping on the SP15 for now!

I'm another PCOS girl. I swear by Liz Earle moisturizers and her cleanse and polish, it's all natural stuff and you can get a trial size pack that lasts for a while, it's well worth the extra pennies. Wonder stuff for me, and I have sensitive skin and eyes as well.

I try to remember my factor 30 for my face every morning and afternoon (in the summer or if out for a long time). I have a couple of brown pigment patches from previos sun exposure that need extra special care.

Marrowgirl, I've been on Metformin for years, I'm 36 and can't say it's made me any more wrinkly than I would have been without it.

Perhaps my water tablets are taking water out of my skin? Or maybe my face was too puffy before, and it meant the wrinkles were plumped out lol!

I've been into boots today and tried some of their new cream, it's a serum which goes on underneath day cream. The lady gave me a sample of day cream and night cream to try too. so far so good, no stinging - she says it's hypoallergenic, and it could be the perfumes in the other creams I've tried that are stinging.

I was in a rush so I didn't check properly, but I think there might be a free gift when you spend a certain amount on no7, although it could just be on make-up - there was also a mention on a poster in the shop window of a voucher booklet.

I'll have a look at boots threads on MSE in a bit and find out what's on offer if I buy the new serum and day cream, I suppose at my age I should be using night cream too?

I'm sure the water tablets are having an effect. It's the same as losing weight at a 'certain age', the plump cheeks hollow out and the lines, wrinkles and sagging are more evident. There' s an interesting but rather long article here about the whole dilemma, there is some good dietary advice at the end for maintaining healthy collagen and elasticity in the skin as we get older!

I got new supplies of the the No7 stuff at the weekend, it was on buy 2 get third free! I would definitely use the day and night cream rather than just the day cream and serum TBH. According to the 'science', a lot of repair goes on while you sleep!!!! You might get away without the serum at your age, if you were trying to save money, just get an extra day cream on the promotion which is the one that contains the SP15. I feel a bit extravagent using the serum, it's quite a small container, I was really trying to s t r e t c h the last one I had, I'm sure its helping, but its maybe a bit more of a splurge! However again, I do find the serum means I need less face cream.
