Great, i will be working because saturday is my contracted day. I hate working boxing day, i think supermarkets and shops should be forced to close to save the workers having people in horrible moods walk through the door.

Yes, she works mondays as well, however she has already done 2 bank holidays this year.
Then she shouldnt have to work it I think.
I work at asda too, only part time just on a saturday in case I dont get agency work during the week. Always sign up to overtime on the BH's to get the time and a half. Last bank hol I know a few people who said they were working for effectively half pay - because they had worked 2 already and could have got paid normal rate to be at home. I'd worked there 5 years and (used to be full time) only just found out about this, although never been contracted to a monday so couldnt take advantage. guess they dont shout about it cos they dont want everyone taking off all the bank hols.

But Boxing Day (the 26th) ISN'T a bank holiday, (you can't have bank holidays on a weekend) Monday the 28th is the bank holiday instead. So if the Saturday is one of her contracted days, then there is no legal (or moral) requirement to get the day off or even get time in lieu for it...

she'll probably have to work it then. get her to try and swap her shift with a seasonal colleague. Im sure her store will have a poor student who is only too happpy to work for time and a half and wont be bothered about working boxing day

As far as I know, the only 2 days your employer cannot force you to work are Christmas Day and Good Friday.

Asda are pretty good to employees, usually them big supermarkets ask who wants to work and who doesnt, there is no forcing anyone on boxing day my ex used to mork in morrisons.

My wife works a few days a week in asda, this year for the first time they are opening on Boxing Day, as it falls on a saturday is it classed as a national holiday? I work in an office so it carries over onto the Monday?

I just wondered if she can refuse to work or not?
    what year did she start?
i'm an ex asda team trainer and if she started after about 2002 she would be on so called 'top rate' as it was called when it got brought in about 04 or 05 (there may be staff in her store that are on less per hour but get extra bank holiday and sunday pay)

if her store has a usdaw rep ask them but the store might not have one as union membership is low there

i wouldnt be surprised if she is working it for about 6.50 an hour
things arent the way they were before, you wouldnt even recognise me anymore- not that you knew me back then ;)
BH is my best mate too, its ok :)

I trust BH even if he's from Manchester.. ;)

  • Its very early to be thinking about staff rota's for xmas period.

The fact Asda are suggests to me that they will simply change contracts to make sure staff have to work if necessary and are doing it now so they can do the notice periods etc

I just don't understand why they feel the need to open on Boxing day - can't people cope with the shops being closed for more than 1 day? Pure corporate greed is all that it is. We need to have more time where work is at the back of our minds, not be pressured into giving up time over Christmas for some already rich people to make even more money. Nothing in terms of what a supermarket offers can be so important that it can't wait for another day!!!

Good Friday isn't even a Bank Holiday!
