Microwave/no cook kids meal ideas

I am about to have building work done which will mean the kitchen is out of use for up to 3-4 weeks eek!

I need to think of some evening meal ideas that the kids will eat that can be made without access to oven/hob. we will still have fridge freezer microwave kettle and toaster available. I may be able to borrow a Baby Belling.

OH and I can have a hot meal at work at lunchtime so can have a sandwich in evening, but the kids have packed lunches at school and cant opt in to school dinners just for a few weeks. they cant live on sandwiches twice a day for a month!

thanks for reading!

Can you get access to a slow cooker or/and george forman grill? You can cook most things in these.

MSE gave me the idea of getting a slow cooker which I asked for and duly received last christmas. Ideally I wanted the kids to be able to eat before I got home from work, but hated the fact that they were always have microwaved meals of some kind. The slow cooker is my saviour and it's now the one thing I would never do without, ever! The number of things you can cook is endless and cooking this way involves the minimum of hassle and preparation (and washing up!!). There's a recipe collection for slow cookers here on MSE, I'd go take a look and see what you fancy.

Before your old cooker is removed you could do a big batch cook and freeze things in portion sizes, curry, stews, pasta bake, lasagne etc. Then all you would need to do is take portions out of the freezer in the morning to defrost then reheat in the microwave in the evening.

A steamer would be a help too, you can cook all your veg in there and things like chicken or fish, you can even boil eggs or cook rice in them.

You could make one evening a week something simple like jacket potatoes with bacon and beans all cooked in the microwave. If you can afford it you could also have chippy tea for them one night a week as a treat, I don't know how many kids you've got or how much they eat but a few bags of chips shared out with a sausage or cheese patty each shouldn't be too expensive, especially if it's padded out with a tin of baked beans heated in the microwave.

What about noodles with vegetables cooked in the microwave. You could chop up some ham and stir that through too

We managed with a table-top/student's oven and the slow cooker, with the hob when it was available. See if anyone can lend you one. People do that on Freecycle round here

A sandwich toaster might help too. Good luck
