Looking at whocallsme this started by in 2008 (atleast) and is still happening, simply it works and the bodies like OFT and FOS do not impose anything to stop it.

It will be a bunch of scammers who have access to a list of names and telephone numbers. They are lining you, or your neighbour, up for a scam if they can get enough information about you.

How do they get the numbers if you are ex-directory? - Easy.

You'll have given out the details when you last filled in a "How was your Holiday" questionaire on a charter flight, or when you sent in a guarantee form, or when you asked a delivery firm to contact you when they were half an hour away from you.

We all give out our names and telephone numbers to people whom we have never met before and then wonder how they get banded around scammers who ring us up and trick us into giving them our addresses as well.

They've got the lot then - name, address, telephone number - even the details of the people next door, it seems as well - that's clever, I hadn't heard of that one before.

I too have just had a strange call from "Telegrams office" asking about my next door neighbour. The South African sounding man asked about my neighbour next door but gave a name I had never heard of. He said in that case they would not be forwarding the telegram to that address. I asked him why he was ringing me to ask about my neighbour and he said that they did not have phone number of next door.
I hung up but now I am concerned as i have read other comments and blogs about it. I did not give out any details other than to say that I had never heard of the name he gave me but am now worried as to why they would be using my details.
    Any other advice anyone ?

One of my neighbours got a call a couple of years ago regarding my ex ,wanting to know if Mr xyz lived at xxx number of yyy street my neighbour simply said I have no idea and hung up .The number came up on her caller id so she passed the number to me ,I googled it and rung back said what had happened and no he didn't live at said address and not to bother my neighbours for the scumbag again.I then got a "telegram " a few day later for my ex which I put in envelope and sent back with a nice letter with my ex address .Normally I wouldn't pass on info but had enough of various debts coming out of the woodwork for him about 25 grands worth in total I think it worked out in the end

  • Hi all. Long time fan, first time poster, as I have been contacted by the 'Telegram Office' recently and wanted to share an underhand tactic that they employed to get my mobile number.

The called the home phone initially, and a babysitter was in as I was at work. They pretended to be from 'my company' and needed to get hold of me urgently so requested my number. Now, if the babysitter had stopped to think for a bit, they would have asked the caller the name of 'my company' to verify, but they were caught off guard and so gave the number out. I then get a call on my mobile regarding 'undelivered mail' for two previous addresses, which I denied ever living at as I suspected that this was a scam of sorts by yet another bloodsucking debt trace agency.

When I found out about the call to home, I called the number and spoke to someone who insisted they would never do that sort of thing... I then went on to threaten legal action against them and warned them never to call again. Although my mobile has remained clear, I think they tried calling the house number again.

The amount of these companies that are springing up at the moment is alarming...surely, this sort of opportunism and chancing the arm has to be monitored and regulated?

Anyways, if anyone else gets contacted by them, just watch out for underhand tactics and remind them that they are currently being investigated by the OFT over their practices!
  • Hi Sparky are you sure your call wasn't from Telogram as opposed to Telegram.

Telogram are part of Crapquest. http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.php?p=1933169&postcount=12 and are well known for underhand tactics.

I have recently come across a debt chaser pretending to be Customs and Revenue, (don't yet know who they represent). They call asking if your are person X and saying they need to discuss your tax code or that you are due a rebate from when you lived at address X, Y, Z.

I think they could be working for On Line Finance part of General Motors.
If anyone else has heard of this please let me know?

    Regards, Handy.

They are still operating this scam.....found a message on my answerphone today (they called from 01252 576376), saying they were the Telegram Office and had correspondence for me, asking me to call 0800 5426416, ref 3663C8 - have since found plenty of information via Google.
