£5 coins are legal tender, and you will be able to use it in the shops. But, not sure if you'll have much luck in Lidl/Netto, judging by my local ones they don't even know normal UK currency!0

I was in Waitrose once doing some shopping and a chap tried to pay with a 5.00 coin and they wouldnt accept it, they called the Manager over and he said it wasnt legal tender just a keep sake

I dont know how collectable the £5 coins are...I have a couple of them aswell...but if you need the cash either take the coin to your bank and exchange it or have a look on ebay to see if they sell for higher than the face value.Its worth a try I guess!!Debt free = December 2010...as of March 2006 it is now January 2010..... as of December 2008 it is now December 2009 :j hopefully sooner!!:jDEBT FREE:j January 2012, took longer but I got there, all by myself, through sheer hard work and pride!0

I have rung to PO and they said they would swap it for £5. Pretty skint today as dont get paid til Friday and the coin has been sat there for years!!!So i am going to exchange it!

I'd check what they're going for on eby.. some commerorative coins are £30 upwards for a £5 coin.. depends on the type and what condition it's in!Debt free 4th April 2007.

Spend it - they have to accept it - I suggest a pub when they've already poured the drinks.
These 'commemorative' coins are just a way of getting fools to throw money away - it's like popping your money in a 0% interest account.
