Oh I'm sorry I didn't check this before posting. Maybe you could look for battery hen places nearby? and take some from there? But not sure how you'd find out maybe google 'battery hen rescue' (adding your area) or similar? Or look for egg producers, chicken farmers, etc.0

Thats longer than I thought S.Mum OH's cousin has a poultry farm in deepest N.I. countryside and I know that they are "cleared out" about every 46 weeks! so under a year:(
Then he does a deep clean and restocks (or Moypark do!)

I think you'll find that's 46 DAYS Artytarty. Not much profit in running hen houses once a year.0

Sad..however thankfully I am looking for some feathery friends that might reward my cuddles and garden space with a few cake ingredients every once in a while. Perhaps the promise of a fab ulster fry with fresh eggs might convince OH, who is vey anti, verging on completely disinterested!!!Feel free to thank me, it makes my toes tingle and my ears go warm :T0

I have 4 rescue hen from littlehenrescue.co.uk that i am collecting on Sunday ,managed to get a run off freecycle.
I think chickens are really great to keep i had them when i was a child so i don't remember them being messy however they did have the run of the really big garden.
Remember make sure they are secure foxes are around day and night and will get into anything!0 -
Just wondered if anyone was a chicken keeper in the city? Im in east belfast, and am considering (i.e. trying to convince oh that it is a good idea!!!) keeping chickens, just maybe 3 or 4, as I love baking and would love a small supply of REAL eggs, and also for the children to see them for real! Does anyone else keep chooks in the garden and do you have any hints/tips? Where did you get your chooks from and is it hard work?!
Thankyou :-)Im knitty, Im nutty, but I dont know anyone called Nora.0 -
my father used to keep bantem hens (not sure if this is what you had in mind ).
He let them roam freely ,the problem was the "c0ck a doodle do "at 5 in the morning didnt impress the neighbours .
A fox got them so no more problems for the neighbours ."Do not regret growing older, it's a privilege denied to many"0 -
LOL!!! I wasnt planning on a boy chick because of that very reason - the doodle do-ing!!! I also didnt want any little babies as a result, so thought I would get 3 or 4 girly bantams only....sad re the fox...guess that might be an issue...Im knitty, Im nutty, but I dont know anyone called Nora.0
