Carer's Allowance

Options
What are the rules on claiming Carer's Allowance for looking after and elderly parent WHO gets Attendance Allowance, if the carer already receives DLA at the high rate for care and low rate mobility ?

Would claiming affect my own payments ?
Does the recipient for the Attendance Allowance have to agree to the claim, as my Mother does not actually want me to apply for it and is very reluctant to take the Attend ace Allowance herself.

Claiming carer's allowance wouldn't affect your own dla payments. If you are claiming any means tested benefits carers allowance may not be paid as it may be considered an overlapping benefit.

Yes the person being cared for needs to be in agreement to somebody claiming carer's allowance for them. When somebody claims carer's allowance, the benefits of the person being cared for can be reduced.

The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

Attendance allowance or dla middle rate care is not reduced by someone claiming carers allowance. However, if the disabled person is on a means tested benefit such as income support, they may lose the disability premium - which is roughly the same as carers allowance.

"If you claim Carer's Allowance, it could affect the amount of benefit the person you care for receives.
The person you care for could lose the severe disability premium in their income-related benefit or the addition for severe disability in their Pension Credit. "

I get high rate DLA for care and incapacity benefit, my Mum doesn't get any means tested benefit and no severe disability premium. Thanks for the information, will check out the website.

    HI
NEVER NEVER second guess with benefits first port of call
CAB or a benefits surgery. Some benefits overlap and some act as a passport to other benefits. Its always been a pain for me but i always got the right advice.good luck
