But its £6.63 you will have and not the bank, Well done. I have to say this overpaying has become my obsession! Its not so much getting rich as making sure the banks don't on our behalf!

Of course if riches should come my way it would be highly welcome!!!!

Hiya - congrats on doing this! I have ordered my free pig from pigsback... the clear one that's bigger & rounder to give more incentive to save! Suggestions on overpaying:

    - Get the free pig from Pigsback or make your own (even a jar with sellotaped lid would do) - add a motivating sticker that says 'mortgage pig' or somethign that will remind you of what the main aim is - ie: to be mortgage free asap!

    - Join the £2 club here on MSE... it's great fun and more motivating when you know 100's of others are doing it... then place each £2 you get in the mortgage pig. You can always get another pot for smaller pennies.

    - Buy some lesser known brands in your weekly shop - even if it saves just £1.50 that's £1.50 more towards the mortgage...

    - Avoid 'lunch in town' when you go shopping - take a banana or apple to stave off the hunger until you get back home...

    - Do 'online odds & sods' savings - something I coined a little while ago, which means whenever I go online to do banking I transfer any odd pennies or so into my savings account. Maybe it will help you too, you can of course do it via phone banking or in person.

    - Pay via the post office or save the pennies in your account and then transfer them - at the end of the day, do whatever keeps you the most motivated. Maybe queuing in the PO makes it more relevant for you, even if it's a small amount. Others prefer not to queue but it doesn't matter - whatever works to get that mortgage down lower!

Good luck - there's lots of support on here and keep telling us your latest news ;o)

  • I decided to change my shopping habits as I couldn't keep to my budget - i don't know why as the cupboards were stuffed and i need bits and bobs most of the time. I remembered when we had to live on benefits years ago and we would do a months shopping at the value store I think it was a food giant. It would take nearly all day and we were so fed up by the end of it that it put us off shopping for weeks - well until we got another payment and HAD to go again!
So I've decided to go back to doing that again, one big monthly shop and see how it goes! Luckily i have a big freezer so i can freeze milk and things or just pop to the local shop for milk!

How do you work out the interest on such small amounts?

I've set up a spreadsheet which calculates interest on a daily basis. When I want to pay an amount in I 1st add up the total interest due until the account is finally in credit, then enter amount and interest due is recalculated. It's obv not 100% accurate, and another poster took it off me & rejigged, but I lost this somewhere along the line, but if you pm me I'll send you mine.

My Pigsback Piggy coughed up £1 in 1ps and £1 in 5ps.

So another whopping £2 off the mortgage today :j

I know little things please little minds and little pants fit little behinds.

And he is male and now has a name Herbut.

Wonder when he will next cough up though.
