What mp3 download site?

I'm not sure if this is the right forum but hopefully somebody will have the answer! - I want to download mp3 music to my PC and player but am just baffled at the choice available. Are there sites where I can just pay and go or should I join a music group and pay monthly? (I don't really like this idea as some months I may not feel the need to download) Where is the best site for me? How much should it cost - the music must be mp3 format. Cheers! Glad of any help. G.

  • The best site around is https://www.allofmp3.com. Entire CDs can be downloaded for around £1. It's a Russian website, so if it does comes up in the Russian language, use the "Eng" link at the top right corner of the page to view the site in English.

This site uses credit cards and takes payment in US dollars with the minimum balance transfer being $10.

Check out Madonna - Confessions On A Dance Floor here: http://music.allofmp3.com/r2/Madonna/Confessions_On_A_Dance_Floor/group_96/album_36/albref_19/mcatalog.shtml

$1.59 (about £1) for the whole CD! :j

It supports all the major formats (mp3, ogg, aac, flac, wav) and various bit rates depending on your taste.
  • does this site work for ipods too?

Sorry, I just got my ipod this morning and am still very much learning.
  • In short - yes!

iPods can play MP3, WAV, M4A/AAC LC, Protected AAC, AIFF, Audible audiobook and Apple Lossless audio file formats. iPod's are unable to play the Ogg Vorbis and FLAC formats.
  • Thank you. Give me til the end of the week and I will be an ipod know-it-all. Or Not.

Now, whether to risk being sued for using the site....

I use allofmp3.com for downloading music sometimes. Before I started using it I had a good check about to find out the legality of the site. Basically it operates on Russian copyright laws which say that anyone who owns a CD 'owns' the copyright to it, so there's not really such a thing as music piracy there. So anyone in Russia downloading from this site is not acting illegally - for other users the legal picture isn't so clear cut but no record label has ever even attempted a legal case against them - usually taken to mean they know they can not win. It is a bit of a grey area.

I'm trying to use it less now - my brother produces house music and has his own small record label, and he says sites like this have put his music up online, he says they are stealing his profits - but arguably anyone downloading it this way would never have forked out to actually buy it properly anyway.

I have an Ipod too, it is pretty straightforward to put music from this site onto your hard drive and then Itunes. One trick I would say is that the tracks within an album seem to automatically revert to alphabetical order once they are in Itunes! To fix this, (in Itunes) go through each of the songs on the album, right click and click 'get info' and just put in the correct track number.

Finally - one thing I was worried about was them doing dodgy things with my credit card details. There's no evidence that this happens with this particular site, but to be on the safe side I used https://www.xrost.com to buy gift vouchers using my paypal account, which you can then use on allofmp3.com, meaning allofmp3.com never see your bank details.
