Weight Bench Advice Please

Hi

My DS is after a weight bench and we've been looking around but one looks much the same as the next.

Can anyone give me any advice on what makes are better than others and anything else you think we ought to know.

He's not into lifting heavy heavy weights but did mention he'd like one of those leg curl things and butterfly things for his arms.

Many thanks

Ms Choc xx

He already has a muscular body (even a six pack), think the objective of the weight bench is to maintain it and get even fitter

I recently bought one off ebay. Its the sort of thing people buy, then hardly use, then sell on. My only tip is dont get a cheap one, you can tell the quality straight away.

i bought a york multigym, around 300 quid in argos.
just look at the machine and the list of exersises, as long as it does all the basics (and the basic bench does leg curls, you can then decide how far you want to go.

i knew i couldnt stop at bench presses so i got one that has 20-30 different exercises.

ironically i always skip the leg curls...

If the aim is fitness then you don't want a multi-gym at all - much more effective to use dumbells/ barbells, Swiss ball, resistance bands and perhaps a Flexi-bar. In real life muscles work in pairs and groups never in isolation. An unbalanced strength training programme sets you up for injury.

Hamstring (leg) curl machines encourage the muscles at the back of the thigh to become dominant. Most men have tight hamstrings (back of thigh) and weak glutes (bottom) - this risks problems developing with the knee joint and lower back. Pec deck again encourages overtight pectorals (chest) muscles and laziness in the upper back, exacerbating postural problems with the shoulder joint and neck.

I'm a qualified personal trainer - I see the sort of issues I am talking about on several times a day. I walk round the gym and pick up on poor technique: nine times out of ten the person will already have a niggle in the joint that I warn them to watch.

    Sorry for the lecture! :o
