Natwest Step Account For Bankrupts

Has anyone else tried to open one of these recently?

My OH was recently declared, called the bank to ask about the basic account and was told that was fine, to bring in his ID and they'd open it for him.

Then he got to the bank this afternoon and the chap on the desk said they don't do them for undischarged BRs any more!

Is this true? Or was it just because he went into the bank just before closing and they couldn't be bothered to go through it all at the time??

Grr. He wanted a coop account, but our nearest branch is 48 miles away!

I didn't thin bankrups could have bank accounts, but I suppose if they are working then they need one. We have a natwest step account because it is so basic.

Just looked at a list of basic bank account and NatWest say :

If any of the following applies to you, then you may be declined : Undischarged bankrupt/record of fraud.

Looks like they are right I'm afraid.

The banks that allow discharged bankruptes but not the record of fraud are :

    Barclays, cashcard account
    Co-op, cashminder account
    Nationwide, flex cash card

Doesn't really matter if you don't have a Co-op branch nearby - you can pay money in and take it out at any post office. They also have internet banking.

I had no trouble opening a step account when I was made bankrupt and as far as I know they still do them for the undischarged. I think what the clause about it is just a get out one, so that they can decline the application if they want. I would say it's more because it was near closing time. It takes about 20 minutes to go through all the paperwork.

Thanks guys. I think he's going to go for co-op or nationwide... though just for interest he's going to go back to natwest and see if he gets a different response this time!

As well as DD and standing orders, along with a solo card that can be used anywhere with a maestro sign, so pretty much anywhere really.
  • Natwest have recently changed their policy and no longer allow undischarged bankrupts to have the step account. abbey also will not allow any banking facilities to bankrupts. i agree try nationwide or co-op.
