Defaults, CCJs, CCCS, Bank Charges......

I found this site by accident - but a FAB accident. In my student days, I was living a care free life. This finally caught up with me about 12-18 months ago.I defaulted on a few payments and I have one CCJ against my name. I am now in touch with CCCS. In total I owe about £8k.

Since reading some of the forums, I will try my luck and write to all my creditors. For example one of my creditors have charged me about £1000 in late fees.

Have I left it to late to claim back any old bank charges, as some of my creditors have sold the debts on Debt companies.

Should I speak to all my creditors before writing them a letter to find out how much I have been charged for late payments etc first?

Also can anyone advise me what a DPA letter is and please feel free to give me any advice on living debt free, how to get a bank account with no credit. I would love to hear from anyone going through the same situation

    In short no, as long as the charges are no more than 6 years ago you can still reclaim them, regardless of the fact that the debt has been sold on, you should contact the original creditor and make a statutory request for your account data, they can charge up to a maximum of £10 for this, but is well worth it if you have substantial funds to recover.

    Good basic accounts are;

    Natwest Step ( c/w Solo card )
    Co-Op cash Minder (c/w electron card)
    Barclays Basic ( no debit card but with ATM card)
    Lloyds TSB basic ( no debit card but with ATM card)
    :rolleyes: It’s hard enough remembering my opinions - without remembering my reasons for them :rolleyes:
  • Do you need your account number. I disposed of all my old statements only recently and as the account is now closed don't know where I stand. Also although they charged me hundreds (abbey) I made arrangements to repay and interest was stopped will this affect any claim I might make? The account was closed about 2 years ago approx.
  • With a SARN notice you will not necessarily need the old account number, a SARN request is a request for ALL personal data held by that organisation, so they should provide all records pertaining to that individual, this should then hold all the relevant account numbers Ect.

    Abbey are hard to get money out of but if you keep going they will back down. I used to love it when they had phones in the branches (now taken out probably due to people like me) cos you could phone them all day for free and get charges refunded.
