It's weird how these things happen, some years ago my husband was told that he could either take redundancy or buy the franchise on his area at a cost of £3,000 which we didn't have. Sorry to hear about your husband. It might sound flippant but for many people (myself included) being made redundant actually turned out to be a very positive thing. Thanks everyone for all the possitive notes! I personally think it may be a good thing too as the pay was rubbish anyway.
