Cleaning the kitchen to cheer myself up - query

;)I know this sounds crazy but I don't believe in making a good day bad, & don't think I'll feel any worse for a bit of cleaning so I'll blitz the kitchen. OS with a hey-nonny-nonny, I'd rather have [STRIKE]a weekend in New york[/STRIKE] some retail therapy, but ....:money:
I'm not OS-SAS & I've never got my head around Fly-ladying (why spend the whole day just putting your shoes on
: maybe I read it wrong
)
I'm not totally lame, I have Stardrops, bicarb, white vinegar & bicarb
. The kitchen is hygienic but we've had building work & DH doesn't know how to close a door so everything is dusty.
Anyway, advice please on these issues:
1. I've got some moulded glass cakes stands I want to sparkle. Is this vinegar & bicard or lemon juice?
2. dishwasher door seals....YUK
. How do I un-yuk them effectively without DH buying some silly, expensive packet like MiL insists on?
3. Oven door: it's double layer glass (but not sealed on top ). Any ideas?
Thanks in advance, I'm sure I'll be back for more advice as the day progresses :rotfl:

Not sure myself there, sorry! A cloth/scrubber and soapy water mix at a guess? There is a thread about cleaning glass2. dishwasher door seals....YUK. How do I un-yuk them effectively without DH buying some silly, expensive packet like MiL insists on?
A toothbrush and some cleaning paste or soapy water? Thread about cleaning a dishwasher

Luckily there is a whole thread dedicated to cleaning oven glass! I use a scourer and soapy water/stardrops mix.
Hope that helps, let us know how you get on"! I'm not a member of the vinegar club yet so sorry I can't be more specific.A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men

I can tell you about the dishwasher seal - I use neat vinegar on a damp cloth all the way round which cuts through any gunk and also any limescale.
Then I clean out the filter /mesh thingy and chuck a glug (technical term!) of vinegar in the bottom of the dishwasher and put it on the hottest setting. It will then look all nice and sparkling!Penny0 -

, so have a look at the thread sometime - it does help make it manageable!

Wash in soapy water, paying attention to the corner, nooks & crannies, then rinse in vinegar and water, and dry with a clean tea-towel (glass cloth if you have one - microfibre might also have the desired effect). Then dust them regularly2. dishwasher door seals....YUK. How do I un-yuk them effectively without DH buying some silly, expensive packet like MiL insists on?
Clean the filters first - take them out and wash them carefully in washing up liquid, paying attention to corners and edges. Try to do this at least once a week, or more if you use it alot.
Then (after you've put the filters back ) run the machine on a hot wash with vinegar in it (and some soda crystals if you have them). About a cup of each should do it.
Finally, put some stardrops or vinegar on a cloth and run it round the door seals, making sure you get behind/underneath/into the gaps.3. Oven door: it's double layer glass (but not sealed on top ). Any ideas?
Take your time - I did mine over several months. I don't use stardrops, but I know plenty of people swear by it, so you could use this - I use a vinegar to dampen a cloth. Wipe the door down when the oven is still warm, as this helps. The first couple of times you may need to give it a bit of a scrub with a scourer (or bicarb paste), but after a while it gets easier. I my whole oven down after use with vinegar now and it seems to stay clean. If the internal glass comes out, soak it in the bath with either washing powder or soda crystals (this is a good way of cleaning the shelves too).
I hope your kitchen is soon sparkling!0 -
Phew... thanks for all the good advice!
Vinegar rinse did the glass cakestands, vases etc nicely: they all live inside cupboards (what is dusting??? :rotfl:) but looked dull. Shall invest in a nice glasscloth asap, I've been hunting in charity shops but they are rare beasts:rolleyes:.
Looks like the cooker door will be an on-going project. The inside is clean, just that silly door (designer must be male or a slattern).
I shall attack dishwasher seal once I finish washing walls etc, as I can do that sitting down
The whole kitchen is in an uproar but I'm ticking off the nasty jobs one by one.
I'm dreading the metal 'venetian' blinds - I was going to wash them in the bath but DH won't unscrew them so it's by hand one strip at a timeI can cook and sew, make flowers grow.0
