    *deep breath* Hiya Murtle

On the phone to a lovely lady who has said 'you're not the first and you won't be the last'. Wish I had sorted this ages ago now! Also going to find about speaking with an accountant for some advice and to get them looking at it.

    Thanks for your support Murtle.

There you go, step 1 accomplished. We always manage to build these things up in our own head....."oh my goodness, I'm the only one that will have done this stupid act, everyone else is so much cleverer". They're not really!!!

I bet they get lots of calls from people saying uh-oh!!! Just think of the weight that will lift when it's all sorted out and you know how to manage your accounts and tax that goes with it.

Support is readily available, I know the panic feeling although it wasn't for tax ;)

Thanks chuck. I feel so silly and panicky, but at least I've made the phonecall now! Reading MSE over the last month (that long already?!) has made me realise I must knuckle down and sort these things out. So far I've sorted debts, divorce and now almost a FTB. Freelance tax stuff now being sorted, next to look at is pensions and savings. Blimey, when are we supposed to get time to eat and sleep when there is so much to sort out?!

Feeling a bit better now, less like a criminal.

I really appreciate the supportive network on MSE. Thanks again Murtle.

blimey you've been through the motions recently!! I think we are meant to eat and sleep whilst we are on here!!! Unless you are on the OS board, then it has to be in the bread maker of slow cooker, so it gets cooked, whilst you are on here :0

Aw, glad you feel a bit better now, you're not a criminal.....they are the ones who are doing it all deliberately and have no intention of coming clean about it!!!

No probs MushyPeas (I love the user name) glad you can see the light with it now!!

Good luck with becoming a FTB, how exciting!!

Well done Mushypeas for taking that first step.

I didn;t mean to scare you! I just meant it would be difficult to sort out cos of needing paperwork etc., but your accountant will be able to do it - that's their job after all.

You won;t end up in prison or owt.

Hope it all works out OK.

Thanks again skintchick and murtle (both cool names!)

Feeling better today. Well at least I have sorted it out now, rather than continually putting it at the bottom of the 'must sort out' pile.

Police haven't called round yet :o

Love MSE, hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

It is a fab supportive network.

    Thanks

Actually I can't think of a cooler user name than Mushy Peas!! Wish I'd thought of it.

When you deal with the Revenue they will work out from the info you supply what you owe in tax and any interest before deciding on penalties, which can be 100% of what you owe!!

However if you read THIS LEAFLET you'll see that you have probably earned a 30% reduction in penalties "for full voluntary disclosure where there was no fear of early discovery by us". You can earn further substantial reduction [up to 40%] for co-operation and the rest is based on how serious they assess your conduct. As I didn't see your OP before you pulled it I can't comment and can only guess from other posters responses but they say, "a premeditated and well-organised fraud" gets the max penalty of 40%, less serious than that and the figure comes down.

So hopefully you have, and can continue to, mitigate any penalties.

    BoL.

Yes, there is light at the end of the tunnel now, just waiting for all the paperwork to come through.

Thanks for your advice Ian W, really useful link. I will read through the information properly later in the week. Useful to know about the reduction in fines. Oh I promise never to put myself through this again!!!

    Cheers

    Old saying mushy peas -

    Always darkest before the dawn!

Sure once it's all sorted and squared off you'll wonder why you worried so much about it.
