I'm currently setting up a DMP with CCCS and I'm tempted to max accounts before I start it.

    Hi mumofthree

I would echo the advice of the previous posters here - I know from other threads / discussions that they know what they are talking about (have you seen their post counts?!! :D)

I just wanted to add that I have asked CCCS about this very same subject. There was a relatively short period of time between my LMB (light bulb moment!) and setting up my DMP, so I didn't have time to stash any money away, or have one last spending spree. I thought long and hard and decided that all I really NEEDED (rather than wanted) was a new vacuum cleaner. So I asked CCCS when they were setting up my DMP (before I'd signed the agreement) if I could just buy a modest £70 upright cleaner beforehand. (I thought being a household item it might be considered an essential living cost). The advice was a definite NO - they said that if I was to purchase anything on my card in the full knowledge that I couldn't pay it back (albeit on reduced payment on DMP), it was technically fraud, and could be seen in a very dim light. Looking back I could have either delayed my DMP a month or two but this was not really an option as I really was overloaded with debt and had no access to cash.

I think as Lensman says, join Freecycle, and see what you can get. However, even if you don't want to do this, rest assured you won't have to wait 9 years before you buy anything again! If you work out a do-able budget with CCCS that allows a bit of breathing space ;), reduce costs where possible, learn how to old-style save (separate board), sell stuff on eBay etc etc you can save a little every month and buy these things in time.
    Hope this helps

If we were freed from the debts we could cover our priority bills(almost).
Why not start by completing your SOA, click here the members will advise where any cuts can be made.

    Also, have you tried Freecycle?
Click here for Martins (MSE) advice on who to contact with Debt Issues - YOU HAVE NO REASON TO USE A FEE PAYING DEBT MANAGEMENT COMPANY- THEY CANNOT DO ANYMORE FOR YOU THAN THOSE LISTED IN MY LINK ABOVE.

All information given by myself is offered informally and without prejudice - if in doubt seek help from a qualified and insured professional

Hey MO3, please don't do that, yes, it must be tempting, but if you increase your debt now it's just more to pay back a few years down the line and your debtfree day will just be a bit further away. I really think you'd kick yourself for doing it. Start your DMP then do the £10 a day challenge and use the money you make to buy nice things for your family.

Thanks Guys. I will post an SOA. It'll take me a while though. I don't know which one on the computer at the mo. I've done the run through on CCCs so many times changing bits here and there that I'm confused as to which one is the most accurate.

God. I sound like such a fraud. I'm not. I just couldn't believe how much CCCS allowed for basic living expenses. We're a family of 5 living on way less than they recommend!! £400+ a month on groceries, lol. I wish! So I tried a few senarios using their figures. I would far rather use their figures and have a better quality of living than tell the truth.

Thankyou for the tip about Freecycle. I've tried Gumtree but I'd forgotten about them.

I'm glad the other posters :Ahave turned your mind away from going daft
Freecycle is a good place to start

The thing with an SOA is what you have now, what you are spending now
If the CCCS guide lines allow for more flexability, good for you:T
nothing wrong in a little treat, or putting that money away to buy the kids something, you and OH something, or paying your debts of quicker

  • Forgot to add the kids dinner money. £75 a month.
  • The debt amounts aren't that big compared to others. I know that so many people are much further in the **** than us but we have been struggling to repay this for so long and it never gets any smaller. We clear a bit and then the car breaks or something comes up and we have to use what little credit we've clawed back. It's a never ending treadmill!!!

  • Not trying to paint a sob story but our daughter had a horrific accident recently. She was in a coma for a week and it was touch and go for weeks. She was in hosptal for 6 weeks and then daily visits for several weeks. Thankfully she is doing well now.

I'm sure you'll appreciate how this not only rocked our everything to the core but in a cold and practical way it affected our finances. OH's boss was brilliant and payed him throughout but I let payments slip. Living in a hospital is expensive. We were with her day and night. To leave her to pay bills was ridiculous.

All our priorities have shifted. Debt seems such an irrelevant hinderance. Bankrupcy seems like an easy option to have all debts wiped within 12 months. Especially if we would be allowed more for living expenses.

I just want to enjoy life with my kids. As we all do.
