So, in a way, you are saying that it is best to have an economy based on consumption rather than manufacturing. My question is, how can this work long term?
If you rely so much on import and export very little, you are just going to get a huge trade deficit.

Long term neither is sustainable, imbalances that build up have to correct at some point. When the imbalance corrects, as it is now, which would you rather be:- a Brit, having to forgo buying your next Volkswagen/BMW/Merc, or a German car worker, losing your job?

It depends how close to the ocean you want to be, how nice the suburb is, stations, whether it has a pool and loads of other things.

I think the Inner West has the best value in Sydney and a 3 bed house would be probably $450-600/week in a nice (but not the very nicest) suburb like Five Dock for example.

North Shore would be more like $550 - 700. Eastern suburbs (the poshest area) slightly more again. The Shire (South of the City - lovely but relatively inaccessible) is around Inner West prices. Then prices fall (generally speaking) as you move out. The cheapest suburbs are in the South West and West. You can rent a shabby 3 bed house in places like Wentworthville or Liverpool for perhaps $320/week or even less.

You are having me over there, $320 a week in Scouseland:eek: I would want the Liver birds on suite for that (well one of them icon7.gif and like she was many moons ago, tell you what I won't bother). I understand your take on the shabby, but not all Liverpool is like that
North Shore, sounds like Blackpool :p

Liverpool is pretty grotty here. The North Shore and Northern Beaches are rather different from Blackpool. Eg:

    Guildford (nr Liverpool I think):

Loads of great beaches in the UK, esp in NE and SW England, Wales and Scotland that I am aware of. SE England beaches tend to be lousy.

The road sign at one end of the Harbour Bridge has a signpost to Liverpool one way and Newcastle the other.
