Check your cupboards!

Always a good idea as you are approaching the end of the month to see what is running out at the end of the month. Dont get caught with out of date food which gets forgotten from previous bulk buying. Make a few menus for the week ahead and use up those items and any others which are just partial packets/opened.

If the manufacturer has dated it in weeks rather than months I'd be a bit wary of using it if it was 2 weeks over I must admit. Others may advise differently though
  • I reckon its ok personally. The date is realy a guideline. If you are going to use it-use it this week. Ive used jars of sauces 6 months out of date but some wouldnt! A jar is safer than a tin(the lining in a tin breaks down(. Check is is sealed first, and if there is a safety button on it, make sure it is still as it should be. If it still like it was when you bought itt go ahead. S/S has a lot of sugar and vinegar in it which are both preservatives. If it doesnt contain meat it sounds like its safe to use.

If it is "best before" it should be ok.

I never knew that could happen
  • Yes, it can be rather poisonous. You mat have noticed that tins these days often have a sort of plastic coating inside them-especially for anything acidic. There is a post on here somewhere where somebody explained the process very eloquently. My personal rule is: Jars ok-tins no way!

Its good to see you back angel. You posted the same thing on the storecupboard challenge a while back and it made me take another look at the sell by dates in my larder.

tins shortly past their date are ok IMO, you have more danger from any dented ones you buy in store or drop on there way home!

there is a difference between use by and best before. However, they are both guidelines that you can use within reason, after all if your bread said best before tomorrow and it was covered in mould, you probably wouldn't eat it. However, if it was fine looking and best before yesterday people question it!! Funny old world, although I can understand with preservatives etc that we don't always really know what the food would be like if it wasnt' good. I don't think I've looked at the best before/use by dates in months, Ive not had any trips to casualty!!!

Hope your sweet and sour is yummy!!!

    x x

in fact, all my opinion.....does not constitute legal advice
