in Cutting tax
Hi All,
I have a permanent job which is my main job and I have a temporary job which is my second job, an opportunity has come for me to make my 2nd job (temp) permanent and I also want to keep my first job. 2 permanent jobs 1 day 1 night.
My question is firstly is it possible, secondly I can I change my first job to be my second job for tax purpose without my first employer knowing about it?
If its possible, How can I go about this.

It's not a problem for HMRC - you simply ask them to swap the codes.
Your 1st employer would be given a new tax code to use but they would not be given the reason why it is changing.0 -
Thanks for that wonderful reply. highly appreciated.0

If you want to sound knowledgeable when you call, tell them you want your 2nd job allocated as your GCD, and the other job as the SUB source.I didn't do it, nobody saw me do it, you can't prove a thing!
Quidco and Topcashback, £4,569
Shopandscan, £2,840
Tesco Double The Difference, £2,700
Thomson EU261/04 Claim, £1,700
British Airways EU261/04 Claim, EUR12000 -
At the end of the year, you will still pay the same tax overall though, right?0

Won't the now second employer smell a rat when he gets the new code?
Could this be a contract where you are not allowed another job "on the side" cos a servant cannot serve two masters?

Make sure there is nothing in your contract or staff handbook about informing employer about changes to other jobs you hold. I know for me I have to inform them if I take on another job.0

Please note that if a police officer has been permitted to have an outside business interest it does not necessarily mean that they are actively engaged in a second occupation – please refer to Police Regulations quoted on page 2 & 3 of the Business Interests (Police Officers) policy..............
The Professional Standards Department have informed me that there are 108 officers with registered business interests and these are recorded as follows:

(nothing personal about this force, I tried another but they had buried their statistics so deeply I could not find them. So well done Merseyside in 2006 - does this sort of remind you of MP's and expenses?)

Before you do this, how much do you earn at each employment? If you earn over £6475 at your current main employment it may serve no purpose to change you main to secondary and vice versa.0

As has already been posted, your current main employer might get suspicious if you suddenley go to a tax code of BR (basic rate)
Provided both codes are operated correctly, then over the year you'll pay the same tax, no matter how its set up. (provided you earn enough to use all the allowances at each job, if you have unused allowances at one job then you'll need to claim a refund at the end of the year)
Another option might be to split your codes between the employers, and have codes of 300 T and 347 T at each employer. (or any combination of figures you want, so long as they add up to 647. )He's not an accountant - he's a charlatan0
