If cycling to a permanent place of employment then no, but travelling by bike in the perfomance of your duties of employments, visiting clients for example, then yes.

There was a scheme running - for people who worked in big companies - where you could get a bike half price.

    Ah, found it: http://www.evanscycles.com/ride2work/faq
  • Further to #2, you can get a mileage allowance if using your bike for work purposes. You can reclaim tax up to 10p a mile I think it is.

Further to this, there is a thing called "cycle scheme".
If you cycle to work, the company you work for buys a bike for you. They reclaim VAT for it and you pay them over period of time the bike back through your payroll.
However, this is deducted from your earnings BEFORE tax deduction, so you get the bike a:VAT free and b:tax free.

0.20 per mile compares favourably with 0.40 per mile for using your own car.
I wonder if one could get away with using a moped at these rates, what about one of those electrically assisted bikes, where the frame is packed with rechargeable lap top batteries?.
I wonder why postmen still use the company bicycles?
