tax deducted from interest pain on bank account

Can anyone help please? I have a joint bank account with my husband and have had since 2002. I am 68 he is 67. I am a non-taxpayer but he still pays a little tax. I have signed a form R85 (getting your interest without tax taken off) at the bank to claim this year's half of the tax deducted. Can I claim back the half of the tax paid on the previous years interest? Thanx.

You can print an R40 from this link ..... and send it in.

    http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/forms/r40.pdf

Joint accounts imply a 50:50 share of the interest. You will probably get all of the interest tax free if you move it all into an account in your name (your personal allowance should be £9490? If you deduct your pension(s) income from that .... does it leave enough headroom to get all the [gross]interest without taking you above £9490? If so - probably worth doing)

    EDIT

Beaten to it ......... now you can print a copy as well!
If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !
