Has anyone used this service and are they any good. Got a special offer for National Tyres last year and they failed it for a really trivial thing so don't think I will be going there again.

You should read the Moneysaving expert section on MOTs. I always use my local council.
My experience is that the garages who offer cheap MOTs are looking for ways to make extra money, as you found out last year.
The council places don't do repairs or servicing so they are not working on commission.
