Setting up new company - want to protect brand

I am looking at registering my company trademark.

I have googled "registering trademark in uk" and end up with thousands of companies, surely there is a government organisation that does this cheaper than my paying someone else to do it for me?

Any ideas anyone?

OK, have found it at last, so in case anyone looks in future, the Intellectual property office looks after trademark registrations:
