you ring royal mail and ask for special delivery bags. i ordered mine on the 14th February and am still waiting, so unsure if you can still get them sent to you. i think you can also go into a post office and ask for these bags.
    Just about to give up!

tracey is right. Apparently others on the thread you mentioned haven't had much luck getting them posted out. You have to go into your local or main PO and ask for them. DON'T pay for them upfront though. Say you will pay for them when you post them. Then if you don't want them for SD's just turn them inside out and they become strong, plain grey poly bags.

Prepare to get a good telling off if you dont send by special delivery though.I did even though i spend about £80 a month in that post office! I know others have been too. They also are only sending out now if you are a business i believe.

I rang 08457 950950, option 3 then option 1. Spoke to a lovely man who said he would send me out 2 packs of each size ( he suggested 2 packs of each so who was I to say no). He said they should be with me in 3 to 4 days.

I did receive them when I last applied. I did only ask for 2 packs them

I had some a while ago, only used a few of them, rest are stuck away in a drawer at home, never thought of turning them inside out to use as poly bag.

pip, you can still go into a post office and ask for them as far as i know. I did that, maybe a month ago. The only thing is, the post master made a comment about only using them for special delivery. So, when I turn them inside out, I weigh the parcel myself and stick my own stamps on by getting the postage price from the royal mail website. I post them in a normal post box rather than go into the post office to receive a telling off. Mind you, I would tell them that it was a second hand one that I had received post in already!

Edited to add ~ I did ask if I could buy plain grey plastic envelopes for normal post, and was told that there werent any. I'm sure there must be tho.

Have you had any complaints about stamps falling off these envelopes once turned inside out?
I only ask because when we first used these for e-bay sales we had a couple of buyers complain that they had to collect their parcel from the PO and pay the postage on it. Obviously we could prove to our buyers we had paid postage as we had a COP, but we refunded them the charge they had to pay and as they could see we wasn't scamming them they left good f/b.
Now when we use these bags, I go into the PO and ask for the printed stamps which are much stickier than normal stamps, haven't had any complaints since we started doing this.
