What would you consider to be a better purchase for £30 or so?

Great ... just dont go using it too much.

B&D are not designed to last, no matter how pretty they look ;)

I have a B&D drill that isnt used for anything other then driling small holes in masonary, putting up shelves etc and it probably wasn't used anymore than an hour total over a couple of years before it quit. And no, it wasnt a one off eberyone I know who had one would never have another.

The laser is a gimimick, if you want a drill for occasional use then you can get a 700W for a tenner, if you want one for work then dont even think about spending £30 ... at least £75

B$Q Precision Power Pro are quite good, I have been using an SDS drill I bought for £30 and its done 10 hours total over a couple of days knocking holes in walls and digging up concrete.

My Black and Decker hammer drill has done fine for me, raymond seems stressed by them, but I don't want his experience to seem like it's typical. I've used mine for a while now, and within the limitations of a cheapish drill it's done fine.
