Ideas on what to buy 10yr old son for birthday...

Have asked him and he just keeps saying he's not bothered ! (sound familiar!)
Really - I would have thought I could get some enthusiasm out of him as its about him getting a gift - but he just says "anything" . HELP!!

He likes the normal boy stuff, bikes, gameboys, PS2 - But NOT football. But I would really like to get him something different - If I had a clue ...

Any bright ideas??? (birthday is end of march)

This might sound a but geeky, but how about a membership of the RSPB, a great pair of binoculars and a spotting scope.

I had the same problem 3 weeks ago when my son turned 10. I got him a PC game, a Gameboy game - but I also got him a Scooter (only £10) which went down very well actually.

Or if he's got that, maybe roller skates/boots?

My son was 10 in January and we bought him a digital camera and a mini fridge for his bedroom plus some games and he was really pleased. He loves the digital camera as he can download the pixs onto his Laptop .

Thanks for your replies everyone - and some good ideas too !!

I'm off to check the Argos site now for.. roller boots (he does have a scooter already) - and latest Gameboy games etc

then I'm gonna check out what you get with the RSPB membership - I think thats a brill idea actually :D (oh yeah - check out binoculars at Argos too)

I really think my almost 10yr old really is too young for an Ipod - thats more in line for his older brother who will be 13 next birthday. The 10yr old is still happy playing with duplo half the time!

I'm a great believer in educational and activity presents to make the littl'uns think or go out and sweat a bit, like the binoculars, rollerskates, etc. A few more suggestions:

    Geomag - for budding construction engineers/chemists - eg, from Toys'R'Us or shopboxuk.com
Character chess sets - eg, Star Wars, Shrek, Marvel Heroes, etc
Wooden automaton kit - build your own working hand-cranked automatons
Dorling Kindersley picture books with large 3D cardboard models to make: of the Space Shuttle or the Titanic (make sure you buy new and that they include the 3D cardboard models)

Having said that, Kentish Jr (10 in a few weeks) will be getting a 7" portable DVD player and Star Wars Battlefront II for XBox...he does get the educational and activity presents throughout the year though...

Thanks for that tip Kentish - checked out the wooden kits and there's a fab one for him of a drummer (he has a set of drums!) ordered that for £20 + postage

Signed him up for the RSPB membership at £13
binoculars from argos reduced to £25
considering whether to get him a bird book as well but will wait and see what comes in his membership kit

but would you believe he's told me this morning he's decided what he wants! - a new stereo! honestly - kids!

off to have a look whats on offer in argos...
