Ughh...I've had this treatment from so many doctors...most memorable was one I went to see when I was about 18. I'm a size 20, so definitely not skinny (and had an undiagnosed thyroid and PCOS problem at the time), and the doctor proceeded to poke me in the stomach with one finger and tell me "you do know you're overweight, don't you?" My God, what a genius...and such a constructive message. Gggrrrrrr.

More recently I had an (overweight) female doctor argue with me about my weight (first time I'd ever seen her)...tried to tell her I was losing weight (which I was), but she ignored me and wanted to put me on weightloss drugs and to attend weekly meetings. Screw that. Actually, no, I take that back - screw her attitude. She was so unbelievably rude to me. Never gave me the thyroxine prescription I asked for, refused to refer me for an ultrasound scan a previous GP had recommended and was just so...god, I can't even describe it. Awful, awful woman.

I don't mind people pointing out that I'm overweight and am quite happy to discuss weight issues with them as long as it's done reasonably and not in an accusational manner. I accept the fact I'm overweight, and also accept I need to lose weight, but the attitude of some doctors just makes my blood boil.

I don't have an underactive thyroid but have encountered many horrible doctors. I'm overweight but not terribly so (now!) size 14. Last doctor I seen to enquire about getting my implant out told me that maybe the acne it was giving me was because I was eating the "wrong foods" and suggested healthy eating, even had the cheek to give me a nice form telling me what food groups to avoid. If he had even checked my history on the computer he would of seen I'd been dieting and lost quite a lot of weight before I seen him and I wasn't even BIG when I saw him, and just to make it ten times worse, he was morbidly obese himself, went red in the face standing up to get the form. Don't mind someone telling me about healthy eating if I request it, but what a cheek, especially when his arterys probably resemble a Mcdonalds chip fryer. Hmmph

uolypool, what a horrible insensitive doctor!! Are there other GPs in the same practice? Ask not to see him again if you can. I did this with a very unpleasant male doc at my surgery and the practice manager asked why. I told her! She apologised and said that I was well within my rights to request not to see him and I was so relieved.

In my case, he was very abrupt, didn't listen to me at all and made me feel like a nuisance over something that I was very concerned about. I don't pay my taxes to be treated like an irritation in a doctor's surgery.

    (((hugs))) to you.

Edit: oops, just read the rest of the thread. I do tend to rush straight in without reading the other posts!!! :o

Sorry, but if you're over weight, you're eating too much. Unless the energy that being stored is magically coming from nowhere!

Glands or whatever, may mean you need less food.

Sorry didn't mean to thank ixwood-meant to quote him/her!

I think everyone is well aware of why you put on weight so that is not a helpful comment!

What a horrible thing to say! I hate the way doctors and nurses treat people sometimes. I've noticed if i'm feeling very anxious (I have severe anxiety problems) i'm treated like an idiot or baby.
If i'm "on form" they talk to me like i'm a super brain:confused:
I remember a female doctor who claimed my swollen legs were just big. I'm not sure why she couldn't be bothered reading my notes etc

Would you like to explain why one of my medication's listed side effects is "weight gain"?
Try doing some research before wading in with fact free , insensitive comments.

You still have control over the weight gain - regardless of what you medication side effects are.

Im on cortisone injections, its very easy for my weight ti pile on, I have to control what I eat to stop myself being huge. I dont just sit back and say its the meds and pretend I cant do anything about it, I can and I do - and its hard work but I refuse to be the size of a house just because the side effects of my meds are "weight gain"

I'm gonna have to disagree with you here...certain illnesses like thyroid make it easier for you to put on weight and harder to lose because it slows your metabolism - means you have to do twice as much exercise and eat half as much to lose any weight (for me anyhow).

Certain drugs, however, do have weight gain as a side effect...certain contraceptives (progesterone being a fantastic example) mean a lot of people put on weight. Certain steroids as well...remember seeing my aunt balloon on them...part of it was weight and part was just swelling, but she could barely keep anything down food wise (cancer) so it wasn't her food intake.

Yes its harder bit its not impossible

Cortisone is a steroid and the weight is easy to pile on, Im having to up my exercise and cut my intake dramatically. Its hard but its not impossible.

I also gave up smoking recently and gained there, its slowly coming off

Where as if I was wanting to lose weight before Id lose at the rate of 2lb a week, now its often less then one - but my weight is going down. I refuse to sit back and say Im fat because of the meds so therefore its not my fault and I dont have to deal with it

But some meds do make you put on a certain amount of weight regardless of how much you exercise. Most of them, sure, if you exercise enough you can more or less counteract the effects, but sometimes it aint possible. I've heard so many stories of very active women who had to take progesterone for one reason or another and were shocked when they put on weight, despite an already very active exercise regime.

This isn't the case for me - becuase of my thyroid and PCOS issues it is very easy for me to put on weight, and very difficult to lose weight, but as you said, not impossible. Problem is the illness does make it that much harder to do so, which is frustrating. It's just recognising when it's a matter of choice, and when it's a matter that's outwith your control...I'd say the latter is quite rare, though...to be fair most people (myself included) could lose more weight if they really put their minds to it. I think I just get frustrated when I cut down on what I eat, exercise a hell of a lot and then hardly lose any (if indeed any at all) weight. A least I know I can lose some weight, though!
